Oneonta, NY. The SUNY Oneonta field hockey team wrapped up their home season with a victory over conference opponent Morrisville State, 3-1. The Red Dragons improved to 4-0 in the SUNYAC and 11-2 overall, and the Mustangs are now 0-5 in the SUNYAC and 3-9 overall. In the match, senior
Madeline Reilly (Pittsford/Pittsford Mendon) led the Red Dragons with two goals.
In the first period the Red Dragons opened up the scoring in the 15
th minute. Reilly scored on a rebound after senior
Nicole Johnston (Bedford Village/Fox Lane) lifted a shot over the goalie but was saved by Morrisville's Haley Evarts. The Mustangs rallied back, scoring a goal of their own a minute later in the 16
th minute. The goal came off the stick of Elizabeth Leva to tie the game 1-1.
Heading into the half the game remained tied, but Oneonta held a large advantage in shots with 17 to Morrisville's five. They also had 10 penalty corners compared to their counterparts two.
In the second half, the Red Dragons Johnston broke the 1-1 tie when she capitalized on an awarded penalty stroke at the 44:11 mark. The stroke was power finessed to beat the goalie on the left side to give the Red Dragons a 2-1 lead. Reilly tacked on one more goal, which was assisted by
Alise Anson (Stone Ridge/Rondout Valley), for insurance three minutes later to give the Red Dragons the 3-1 advantage.
For the Red Dragons, sophomore
Danell Jones (Whitney Point/Whitney Point) had six saves enroute to her tenth win of the season.
The Red Dragons next match is on the road against Nazareth College on Sunday at 2:00pm.
