Brockport holds off Bears in SUNYAC opener, 8-5

BROCKPORT, N.Y.—The College at Brockport (4-5, 2-0 SUNYAC) outlasted the SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (3-6, 0-1) 8-5 in its SUNYAC opener on Saturday afternoon. Senior attackman Eric Soderquist (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) accounted for four points for the Bears on three goals and an assist. He moves past Harrison Rogers '06 into sixth place on the program's all-time scoring list with 151 points (98g, 53a). Junior midfielders Ryan Waldron (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) and Chris Graniello (Bellport, N.Y./Bellport) also scored for the Bears.

Potsdam got on the board first as Graniello set up Waldron at 7:03. Liam O'Connor tied the game 30 seconds later and started a 3-0 run. O'Connor then set up Brendan Halleran for a 2-1 lead at 1:15. Bears junior goalie Zach Sheridan (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) made four saves in the opening 15 minutes.

Brian McGreevy put Brockport up 3-1 at the 10:57 mark of the second quarter. Potsdam battled evenly with the Golden Eagles during the period and finally closed the gap to 3-2 in the final minute of the half. Soderquist fed Graniello for his second career goal with 39 seconds left. Sheridan stopped another four shots in the second, but was outdone by his Brockport counterpart Dallas Meyers, who made seven saves.

Billy Coppola opened the second half scoring with an extra-man goal at 7:00 to open up a 4-2 lead. However, Soderquist countered with two goals in 1:18 to tie the game. He scored an unassisted goal at 4:52 and then with a helper from senior midfielder Nick Orsini (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) at 3:34.

The Golden Eagles outscored the Bears 4-1 in the fourth quarter. Halleran scored his second at 13:44 and Colton Oliver made it 6-4 at 11:10. Halleran gave Brockport some insurance with his third of the game at 3:31 and Oliver struck again with 2:47 to play. Soderquist completed his hat trick with 48 seconds remaining, but Potsdam rain out of time.

Sheridan finished with nine saves and Meyers stopped 16 shots for the win. Sophomore midfielder Josh Huiatt (Lisbon, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) had a team-high five ground balls and junior long-stick middie Colby Chapman (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) collected four ground balls and caused two turnovers.
