OSWEGO, N.Y – The Oswego State softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Alfred University on Monday afternoon at the Laker Softball Field. Oswego won a low-scoring first game, 1-0, and then fell by a score of 6-1 in the second game. Oswego moves their record to 16-12 and the Saxons go to 19-13 on the season.
Game 1
The first game was a battle of pitching with neither team able to string together back-to-back hits. Oswego got four hits in the contest while Alfred only recorded three. The difference in the game was that one of the hits for the Lakers was a third inning homerun by
Rebecca Vilchez. Center fielder
Sarah McCullough was also solid at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles.
Vilchez (11-7) earns the win in pitching the first three innings and the final frame, allowing two hits, no walks and striking out a pair.
Angela Frampton pitched the fourth, fifth and sixth innings and fanned three Saxon batters while allowing just one hit.
Game 2
In the second tilt, sophomore
Jessica Roe (1-2) went the distance and allowed only one earned run while striking out four batters, but four Oswego errors led to six runs for the Saxons.
The Oswego offense was able to score in the bottom of the seventh when McCullough walked and advanced on a
Joelle Nesci single. Pinch hitter
Katie McIntyre grounded out to score McCullough, but the Lakers could not finish the comeback.
The softball team is back in action at 3 p.m. on Friday as they travel to Fredonia for a conference doubleheader.
