Baseball Completes Sweep of New Paltz

OSWEGO, N.Y. - The Oswego State baseball team defeated the Hawks of SUNY New Paltz by a score of 6-4 on Saturday to complete the three-game sweep.  With the win, the Lakers improve to 11-5 (5-1 SUNYAC) while New Paltz falls to 7-9 (0-3).

It was another fast start for Oswego as they put up five runs in the bottom of the first inning.  With one out in the inning, freshman Ryan Enos and junior Mike Dellicarri singled to begin the threat.  After a John Barnes line out, Eli Holton hit a triple to deep left to plate both runners.  Matt Deblasio walked and Robert Donnelly was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Josh Hoagland.  Hoagland reached on an error to plate Holton and make it 3-0.  Junior catcher Collin Thompson reached on a single to third and advanced to second on an errant throw that brought home both DeBlasio and Donnelly.

For the third-straight game, the starting pitching for Oswego was untouched by the opponents.  Brian Nolan (3-1) went six innings and struck out four New Paltz batters without yielding any runs.  The starting trio of Nolan, Donnelly, and Reston Pettit threw 20 innings in the series without allowing a run to score.

Matt Zakala came on in relief of Nolan in the seventh and recorded a strikeout and induced a double play for a 1-2-3 inning.  Oswego added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh when Dellicarri walked to open the inning.  Singles by Kevin Hylas and Holton loaded the bases for Myles Kutscher.  Kutscher grounded into a double play but that allowed Dellicarri to plate the team's sixth run.

The New Paltz bats awakened in the eighth with a trio of hits that got them on the scoreboard with three runs.  Junior Matt Bowman was able to come in and record the final four outs of the contest while giving up an unearned run in the ninth to earn his second save of the season.

Holton and Dellicarri both went 2-for-3 on the day to lead the Lakers while Barnes connected for this third triple in the last two games.  Dellicarri (.460) and DeBlasio (.471) lead the team in batting average on the season while Barnes now has five triples on the year.

The team is back in action at 2 p.m. on Monday when they host SUNY Canton in a doubleheader at the Laker Baseball Field.
