Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Lakers Fall in OT in a Top 10 Matchup at Hobart

GENEVA, N.Y. – The nationally-ranked Oswego State men's ice hockey team faltered for the first time in 2017-18 with a tough 2-1 overtime loss at No. 9/10 Hobart on Sunday afternoon. Oswego – ranked seventh in both national preseason polls – falls to 1-1-0 on the year while the Statesmen mirror that record.

Hobart opened the season on Friday with a 3-2 overtime loss at home to Elmira College, who the Lakers then turned around and beat 4-2 on Saturday night.   The Statesmen avoided two OT losses at home with a goal by Jonas Toupal just 52 second into the extra period.

Neither team was able to score in the opening period but Toupal struck first with a power-play goal 1:29 into the middle stanza. The Lakers answered before the period was out, as Cameron Berry recorded his first goal of the year with 1:25 to play in the second. The junior was assisted by senior Mitch Herlihey and sophomore Michael Gillespie. It was Gillespie's first collegiate point as a Laker.

Hobart was 1-for-3 on power-play opportunities while the Lakers were unable to find the back on two chances. The Statesmen also held an advantage on faceoffs, winning 35 to the Lakers' 19.

In 60:52 of action, Cedric Hansen was solid in net for the Lakers, stopping 25 shots in his first-career start. Hansen made eight saves in the opening period, seven in the second and 10 in the third to help force five extra minutes.

After the quick turnaround on Sunday, Oswego will now have just one game next weekend, traveling to Cortland to face the Red Dragons at 7 p.m. on Friday.
