Andres Rivera leads charge in men's basketball win against Grove City

Sophomore scores collegiate best 26 points

The SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team defeated Grove City 92-60 tonight in the opening game of the Susquehanna Trailways Tip-off tournament.  The win for Oneonta (2-0) puts them in the championship game tomorrow afternoon versus the winner of the Susquehanna/King's game scheduled for a 3pm tip-off.

"We stressed a defensive mindset tonight," said Head Coach Cameron Conover.  "Our guys had great focus throughout the game on the defensive end, which led to easy baskets on the other end."

Leading the Oneonta offense tonight was sophomore Andres Rivera (Bronx, NY/Walton) and junior Kevin Mackin (Nanuet, NY/Nanuet) scoring 26 and 22 points respectively.  The 26 points by Rivera was a collegiate high playing 22 minutes off the bench.  Rivera made 10-of-16 shots overall including 3-of-4 from long range.

Mackin shot nearly 50 percent from behind the arc making 6-of-13 from deep and 7-of-17 overall.

The only time that the Red Dragons trailed in the game was 3-0 after the first shot of the game by Grove City (0-2).  Mackin tied the game on the next trip down the floor with his first three of the night.  Oneonta opened up a 12-5 lead before Grove City surged back to tie the game at 13 apiece with just over 12 minutes remaining in the first half.

Oneonta broke the tie and asserted its dominance with seven unanswered points en route to pushing its lead to 33-19 on a three-point play by Rivera.  By the end of the first half, the Red Dragons led 52-28 shooting 54 percent from the floor.

The second half was more of the same for Oneonta expanding its lead to as many as 36 points with just under eight minutes remaining in the game.  The Red Dragons shot an even 50 percent in the second half while adding five, three-pointers to go with the six they made in the opening half.

Oneonta scored 36 points in the paint and turned 22 turnovers into 26 points.  Oneonta had 17 assists on its 31 baskets led by sophomore Sean Nolan (Voorheesville, NY/Voorheesville).  Nolan also led the team with eight rebounds while scoring 13 points.
