BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport volleyball team blew past Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) winning 3-0 Tuesday evening. The Golden Eagles move to 20-8 on the 2017 season, where the Tigers drop to 13-16.
Brockport fell behind early in set one after a three-point run from the Tigers to have a 3-2 advantage. The Green and Gold pulled ahead 7-5 after back-to-back kills from
Brianna Richardson and
DeAnna Ortiz-Whittemore. Both teams battled as they traded points, until RIT edged past Brockport, taking a 14-12 lead. The Golden Eagles fought back as they notched two straight points late in the set to take a 20-19 lead. Brockport used the momentum of a three-point rally to close out the first set 25-22.
The Green and Gold conquered set two winning by a score of 25-9. The set opened up with a 10-point streak from Brockport to take an 11-1 lead.
Kathleen Irwin lead the run with five aces, where
Meaghan Mastro accounted for three kills and a block, and
Jamie Schlesinger added a kill. The lead was extended when
Maddy Taylor stepped into serve rotation to ignite a six-point rally, where she aced three points, and one kill apiece coming from
Lindsey Luce, Mastro, and Ortiz-Whittemore. The Golden Eagles easily closed out set two with a final kill from Richardson to win by the eventual score.
Brockport trailed early in the third set by a score of 4-1. The Golden Eagles bounced back to regain the lead 9-6 after a five-point push, with Ortiz-Whittemore, Schlesinger, and Mastro earning points for the offense. The Tigers fought back to tie the game up at 12-12, before the Green and Gold earned a three-point rally to take an 15-12 advantage. Both teams battled it out to the finish to have third set to have the score tied at 24-24. Brockport closed out the last set and the match by a score of 26-24, with back-to-back kills from Ortiz-Whittemore.
The Brockport offense was led by Ortiz-Whittemore who finished with 11 kills, and Masto, Schlesinger, and Richardson all finished with six kills apiece.
Noelle Poloncarz paced the offense dishing out 24 assists on the evening. Poloncarz and Schlesinger led the defense accounting for nine digs each.
Brockport stays at home for their Golden Eagles Invitational starting this Friday with games at 5 p.m. vs Allegheny, and 7 p.m. vs Keuka.
