Brockport Holds On For First Victory of the Season

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The College at Brockport women's lacrosse team held onto their first State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) victory over Oswego State Saturday afternoon, winning by a final score of 17-14. The Golden Eagles move to 1-6 (1-0 SUNYAC) in 2018, where the Lakers fall to 4-3 (0-1 SUNYAC).

Brockport fell behind early, as Oswego jumped out to a 2-1 lead over the first nine minutes of play. The Green and Gold answered with a pair of goals coming from Andrea Zlinsky and Hannah Cullen on a free position, to take a 3-2 lead. After Oswego tied the game up, the Golden Eagles dominated the remainder of the half, starting with a five-goal run. Jade Williams kicked off the scoring for Brockport, followed by a pair of goals from Chloe Kurst. Heather Conklin got in on the action as she beat a defender and sent her shot past the goalie, then Cullen tacked on the final goal of the run to lead, 8-3. The Golden Eagles ended the half scoring two goals from Victoria Thompson and Jillian Babinsky to hold a 10-5 advantage heading into halftime.

The Green and Gold started out slow in the second half, which put Oswego back into the fight. The Lakers notched four straight goals through the first eight minutes of the action to now trail 10-9. Brockport answered the hot Oswego offense with a goal of their own from Zlinsky to pull ahead 11-9. The Golden Eagles defense struggled as the Lakers eventually tied the game up on back-to-back goals, 11-11. Brockport stepped up and eventually slowed down the hot Oswego team, then pulled ahead 13-11 with goals from Williams and Sara Grapevine. The Green and Gold added four more goals, including a last second goal from Conklin to ice the game, as they won 17-14.

Brockport held a slight advantage over the Lakers in groundballs (18-11) and draw controls (18-11), while they successfully cleared 18 of their 20 attempts.

Williams and Cullen led the scoring for the Golden Eagles as they finished with three goals each, while Grapevine end with two goals and five assists.

Sarah Brown played the full 60 minutes in between the pipes as she stopped eight shots, with a few crucial saves coming in the final moments of the game.

The Brockport women's lacrosse team travel home for a tough conference matchup against SUNY Geneseo this Wendesday April 4, with the game set to start at 4 p.m.
