Field Hockey Falls To Hartwick After Late Goals

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport field hockey team fell to 1-5 on the season after a 3-1 loss to Hartwick College on Saturday afternoon. The victory sends the Hawks to 4-2 on the season.

The contest was a defensive battle through and through, starting right from the opening whistle with both squads locking down to keep the game scoreless through the first twelve minutes. Hartwick got on the board first, with Brooke Singer slapping one past the goaltender off the penalty corner.

The Golden Eagles found an answer in the 29th minute, as Abby Meagher netted her first goal of the season to even the score at a goal apiece. Margo Tremaine had the assist on the tally, driving down the left side of the circle before flipping a beautiful backhanded pass through the crease where Meagher was there to knock it in.

The final five minutes of the opening stanza would remain scoreless, and the teams would go into the break still tied at 1-1.

Sarah Beam was a brick wall in net for the Golden Eagles yet again, but it was not enough as Hartwick was able to score two goals late in the second half to win the contest by a final score of 3-1. Beam, who is the two-time defending SUNYAC Defensive Player of the Week, racked up 24 saves on the day, 16 of which came in the second half.

Tremaine nearly scored a goal of her own in the final few minutes of play, ripping a shot off the goaltenders pad off a penalty corner opportunity. She collected her own rebound, and sent another shot that beat the goalie, but it was waved off as a foul was called seconds before the shot was released.

The field hockey team will be back in action on Tuesday, when they welcome Elmira College to Dr. Linda Arena and Class of '69 Field Hockey Venue for a matchup beginning at 7 p.m.
