Brockport Falls To New Paltz After Late Comeback

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The College at Brockport women's basketball team dropped a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup with SUNY New Paltz Friday evening by a final score of 68-57. The team falls to 2-3 (1-0 conference) on the season, while the Hawks improve to 3-2 (1-0).

After New Paltz jumped out to an early 8-6 lead in the first quarter, the Golden Eagles locked down their defense and went on an 11-0 run to take a commanding 17-8 lead. Bailey Pratt, Emily Nestler, and Megan Anagnostopulos were instrumental in the run, each connecting on field goals and also getting to the free throw line.

The Hawks began to close the gap early in the second quarter of play, and took a 24-23 lead with 5:14 remaining. Five combined points from Anagnostopulos and Schyler Laux kept the Green and Gold within striking distance, keeping the team within three going into the break.

Brockport started hot in the third quarter, going on a 12-2 run to regain the lead at 40-33. They held that advantage for the remainder of the quarter, using a late layup from Julianna Taylor to go into the final frame leading by five.

New Paltz started to heat up in the fourth and took the lead with 8:37 remaining on a pair of Maddy Van Pelt free throws. They extended that lead with solid defensive play throughout the frame, and despite a late jumper from Nestler, came away with the 68-57 win.

Nestler led Brockport scorers with 17 points on the night, 11 of which came in the second half. Pratt was close behind with 15, while Laux contributed 13 and made all seven of her free throw attempts.

On the boards, the Golden Eagles were also paced by Nestler who grabbed nine, while Laux and Brianna Neeley recorded six apiece.

Brockport will get back on the court tomorrow afternoon when they square off against Oneonta with tipoff set for 1 p.m.
