McCumiskey Helps Split Double Header Against Oneonta

BRIGHTON, N.Y. – The College at Brockport Baseball team played an intense pair of games on Monday against SUNY Oneonta. After losing the first game 5-4, the Golden Eagles used a complete game by Sam McCumiskey to claim a 3-2 victory in the second leg of the double-header.

The Green and Gold ended the day with a 6-9 overall record and 2-3 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play, while the Red Dragons see their record move to 7-10 on the year and 3-2 in SUNYAC competitions.

Game 1: Loss, 5-4

Brockport got ahead in the first game after an opposition error brought across Nicholas Pastore. Starting pitcher, Mark Giallanzo, was untouchable in the first three innings, going 1-2-3 in each, while striking out four batters. The story of the game came in the fourth inning when four runs came across for the Red Dragons and put the Green and Gold behind 4-1.

The Golden Eagles were not done however, as they chipped away at the deficit starting in the sixth inning with an RBI double to left field by Anthony Eaton, his tenth of the season. Justin Valentino added an RBI of his own with a single in the eighth and Tom Kretzler scored Pastore to cut the deficit to 5-4, but the comeback fell short.

Giallanzo finished the game after 5.0 innings pitched and he gave up four runs, two earned, on five hits and two walks, while striking out five. Chris Camer impressed out of the bullpen, tossing two no-hit innings.

Game 2: Win, 3-2

The Green and Gold fell behind after the first three innings after a homerun in the second and RBI single in the third, but McCumiskey helped shut down the Red Dragons and gave the bats a chance to catch fire. Kretzler kicked off the fourth inning with a single to center field and got to third base after stealing second and moving over on a passed ball. Eaton, Austin Hall and Jack Wallwork all worked walks that loaded the bases and scored Kretzler to cut the deficit to 2-1.

After McCumiskey retired six of the seven batters he faced in the fifth and sixth inning, the Golden Eagles knocked in two more runs to claim the lead. Valentino worked a walk to start the inning before Wallwork forced an error by the pitcher using a well-placed bunt. Drew DeBlasiis used a sacrifice bunt of his own to move his teammates over a base. After Matt Van Allen was walked, another error by the pitcher on a hard hit ball by Luke Gilbert, scored the two runs that won the game for the Green and Gold. McCumiskey pitched a 7.0 inning complete game, giving up only two runs on four hits and struck out six.

Brockport looks to continued momentum Tuesday, March 27 when they travel to Houghton College for a non-conference double header starting at 3 p.m.
