POTSDAM, N.Y. - The College at Brockport softball team split an important State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader on Monday afternoon against SUNY Potsdam. The Golden Eagles now move to 12-16 (2-10 SUNYAC) on the year, where the Bears drop to 5-19 (2-8 SUNYAC).
Game 1: Lose, 7-6
The Golden Eagles started hot as they jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning. After the first three batters loaded the bases,
Lindsay Wachna knocked
Alexis Ross in on a sacrifice fly to center field.
Karleigh Eaton kept things going with a double to right center, which scored two runs. The final run of the inning came on an error by the Potsdam that sent Eaton home.
The Bears fought back to eventually reclaim the lead 5-4 in the bottom of the third. The Golden Eagles answered to tie the game up 5-5 off a
Kacie Hubbard single up the middle to score
Alison Missavage. The Green and Gold took a 6-5 edge in the top of the seventh inning, when
Morgan Flamholtz scored Missavage on a sacrifice fly.
Brockport slipped in the bottom of the seventh inning when Potsdam notched an additional run to tie the game up 6-6 and force extra innings. After two scoreless at-bats for the Golden Eagles, Potsdam eventually capitalized on the opportunity and notched a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to win, 7-6.
Amanda Colon pitched seven innings and allowed four runs on eight hits, while striking out four batters. She was helped today by Ross, Missavage, and Hubbard who all finished with three hits apiece.
Game 2: Win, 9-0
The bats came alive in game two as Brockport ended the game in the fifth inning by mercy rule.
Casey Danko got the scoring started in the top of the first, when she scored on an Eaton sacrifice fly to right field.
The scoring onslaught continued in the third inning, when the Green and Gold added five runs to pull away, 6-0. Ross got the first run on the five-run rally, when she scored on a fielder choice. Megan Cullen came across home plate next after she advanced on a Potsdam throwing error. Flamholtz knocked the next two runs in on a double to left center, to then steal home two plays later.
Brockport added three more runs in the top of the fourth innings, while holding the Bears scoreless through five innings of play to end the game on a mercy rule.
Becky Knorr threw the full five innings and only allowing two hits, no runs scored, and recorded three strikeouts. All nine batters recorded a hit in game two, with seven of them scoring a run.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action tomorrow when they host Oneonta April 24, with the times of the games to start at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
