Brockport Ends Regular Season With Comeback Victory

BROCKPORT, N.Y.—The College at Brockport baseball team wrapped up their regular season with an impressive comeback win over the University of Rochester, 10-7. The Golden Eagles used seven runs in two innings to take command of the game and strong pitching from the bullpen helped close it out. The Green and Gold head into the post-season with a record of 18-18, while the Yellow Jackets now sit at 14-13.

Brockport tabbed the first run of the game in the second inning after Justin Valentino hit a sacrifice fly to right field that was deep enough to drive in Lou Miceli. After a rough top of the third and fourth for the pitching staff, the Golden Eagles found themselves down 6-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth. Anthony Eaton kicked things off with a one out single up the middle and Miceli got hit by a pitch to put two runners on. Two batters later, Nik Malachowski and Avery Brooks sent back to back singles into the outfield and cut the deficit to 6-3. Brooks forced an error by the catcher on a steal attempt and it allowed Malachoswki to jog home and bring the score to 6-4.

Chris Cramer worked a perfect fifth in order to bring the bats back up to the plate. Austin Hall started the bottom of the inning with a walk and Tom Kretzler singled up the middle as Hall hustled to third. Justin LaRosa then laid down a sacrifice bunt that brought home a run and Eaton drove in the tying run with a hard hit double to left field. The Golden Eagles took the lead a couple of batters later when Liam O'Leary sent a pinch hit single to left field to bring the score to 7-6. Brooks added another run after sending a sacrifice fly to center field. The Green and Gold added a pair of runs in the sixth inning to extend the lead to 10-6.

Trevor McCarthy and Maddux Minton worked a perfect 2.0 innings to start the game, with each recording a strikeout. Casey Piazza earned the win after pitching 2.0 innings of no-hit baseball and striking out two. Brendan Heywood earned the save as he came in the ninth and closed out the Yellow Jackets.

Brockport now set their sights on a State University of New York Athletic Conference playoff run as thy travel to SUNY Cortland to battle the Red Dragons. The game is slated for a 12 p.m. start on Thursday May 3.
