Women's lacrosse powers past Fredonia 22-7 in regular season finale

Red Dragons face Oswego in opening round of SUNYAC Tournament

Senior Taylor Casey (Garden City South/Kellenberg Memorial) scored seven goals today to lead the SUNY Oneonta women's lacrosse team past Fredonia 22-7 in the regular season finale.  Casey, who became only the third player in program history to reach 200 career goals this past Tuesday versus Potsdam, now has 207 with more games to play.

The win for the Red Dragons moved its overall record to 9-6-1 overall and 5-3 in the SUNYAC earning the No. 4 seed for the conference tournament, which begins on Tuesday.  Oneonta will host Oswego, the No. 5 seed, in a rematch of last year's first round game where the Red Dragons prevailed.  Game time for Tuesday has not been set yet, so be sure to check www.oneontaathletics.com on Sunday or Monday.

Freshman Sophia Calabrese (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) got things off and running in the opening minute of play with her first goal of the game off an assist from junior Kelsey Cohen (Baldwin/Baldwin).  Calabrese finished the contest with five goals.

After an unassisted tally by Madeline Haney evened the score less than one minute later, the Red Dragons took control ripping off five unanswered to grab a 6-1 lead midway through the first half.  Casey and Cohen each scored a pair while Calabrese added her second goal of the game.

Oneonta continued to pile it on taking a 13-4 lead into halftime.  Casey tallied three more times while freshman Jordan Ilchert (West Islip/West Islip) scored twice.

Oneonta put the game completely out of reach in the first 16 minutes of the second half scoring four straight goals to increase its margin to 12 goals at 17-5.

Sophomore Lexi Keen (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) picked up the win in goal for Oneonta making six saves in 50 minutes of action.  Junior Jaclyn Marry (Long Beach/Long Beach) finished the game and recorded one save.
