CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Back in action for the first time in over three weeks, Fredonia dropped both ends of its SUNYAC baseball doubleheader Sunday to No. 10 ranked Cortland, 6-1 and 11-3. Fredonia's last game was March 17 in Florida, a span of 22 days comprised of weather-related postponements and cancellations.
The Blue Devils (10-6 overall / 1-4 SUNYAC) threatened in the top of the first of Game 1 when
Patrick Sheehan (West Seneca, N.Y. / Orchard Park) tripled with one out. He was left stranded after Cortland's Christian Dufresne retired the next two on strikes. The Red Dragons used that momentum to score three runs in the last of the first off
Luke Kuczenski (Orchard Park, N.Y. / Orchard Park). .
Fredonia put runners on second and third with one out in the second yet Dufresne pitched out of that jam, too. The Blue Devils broke through and cut the Cortland lead 3-1 in the fourth inning.
Kevin Yirinec (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) drew a four-pitch leadoff walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a single by
Joseph Coene (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) and a subsequent error by Dufresne. The Blue Devils' last big threat came in the top of the seventh when they loaded the bases on walks with two men out, but could not score. Kuczewski was tagged with the loss (3-1) while Steve Salisbury (3-0) earned the win with 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.
Cortland got to Game 2 starter
Bailey Gauthier (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) for six runs -- only two of them earned -- and six hits over the first two innings. The Red Dragons scored five more runs off a pair of Fredonia relievers before
Sam Cestra (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) pitched one scoreless inning. Offensively, the Blue Devils scored two runs in the fourth in an RBI single by
Daniel Goodbread (Tully, N.Y./Tully) and a sacrifice fly by Yirinec. The final run came in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by
Brian Chatt (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport).
The three-game series concludes with a Monday day game, scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
