Cortland Defeats Fredonia, 2-1, with Second-Half Comeback

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's soccer team scored two second-half goals to erase a 1-0 halftime deficit in defeating Fredonia, 2-1, Friday afternoon in SUNYAC action at the Stadium Complex. The Red Dragons improved to 6-2-3 overall and 3-2 in the conference with the win. The Blue Devils dropped to 6-7 and 2-2.

Junior Vanessa Romero (Valhalla) and freshman Erin Valente (Latham/Shaker) each scored her second goal of the season for Cortland. Freshman goalie Danika Svendsen (Stillwater) made one save in the first half, while junior Abby Miller (Andover) stopped all three shots she faced on goal in the second half.

Junior Aleeya Clemons (Olean) netted her team-high ninth goal of the season for Fredonia. Freshman Erin Pratt (Rotterdam/Schalmont) assisted on the score. Freshman goalie Marissa Quimby (Ballston Lake/Shenendehowa) registered eight saves.

The Blue Devils took the lead in the 32nd minute. Pratt sent a long pass from near midfield toward Cortland's 18-yard box. Clemons collected the ball in stride, dribbled a few yards and sent a shot off of Svenden's hand and inside the right post.

The Red Dragons pressed right from the start of the second half, coming through with the game-tying goal just 1:16 into the period. Romero controlled a loose ball deep on the left side of the box, beat Quimby one-on-one and tucked a shot into the open goal. Ten minutes later, Romero nearly struck again, but Quimby made a diving save on her shot from the left side.

Valente tallied the game-winning goal in the 79th minute. After a Cortland corner kick, Fredonia attempted to clear the ball away, but Valente one-timed a shot from the middle of the box on a loose ball that went to the upper right of the goal. The Blue Devils managed just one shot the remainder of the game with Miller making a routine save.
