Lakers outlast Potsdam, 13-10

OSWEGO, N.Y.—Oswego State (10-4, 3-3) couldn't shake the SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (4-10, 1-4) on Tuesday night, but managed to hold on for a 13-10 victory. Senior attackman Lukas Baildon (Berlin, Germany/JFKS Berlin) scored a career-high four goals for the Bears and sophomore midfielder Josh Huiatt (Lisbon, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) added a goal and three assists. Senior attackman Eric Soderquist (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) scored twice to move within two points of Hall of Famer Chris Mele '87 for fourth place on the scoring list with 165 points (105g, 60a). Junior goalie Zach Sheridan (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) put forth another sterling effort with 17 saves.

Baildon and Huiatt scored back-to-back to open the game at 9:39 and 8:12. However, Tyler Nason and Bobby Emmerson each scored two in a row to put the Lakers up 4-2 at the 7:25 mark of the second quarter. Soderquist ended the run 18 seconds later, but Nason notched his third at 4:20 to make it a 5-3 contest. At 3:38, sophomore attackman Tayte Murray (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) set up Baildon's second tally, but Nason netted his fourth on a man-up situation with 52 second left in the half. Oswego led 6-4 at the break.

Huiatt set up Baildon just 1:16 into the third quarter and after a Laker goal from Caleb Alford at 13:03, junior midfielder Ryan Waldron (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) struck at 5:37 to make it a 7-6 contest.

Alford netted another with 50 seconds remaining in the third and Mark Niechcial opened the fourth with a goal at 10:33 to make it a 9-6 Oswego advantage. With time running out, the Bears made a final push, outscoring the Lakers 4-1 over the next 5:22. Senior midfielder Nick Orsini (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) scored at 10:17. Baildon buried his fourth on an extra-man opportunity with a helper from Huiatt at 7:32. Sophomore midfielder Jon Jerman contributed his first collegiate goal with 6:33 remaining to tie the score at nine. After Nason notched his fifth of the contest at 5:20, Soderquist answered with his second goal nine seconds later and the game was even again. Unfortunately, the Lakers proved too much in the closing minutes of the contest. Alford completed his hat trick at 3:39 and Nason added insurance with his game-high sixth marker at 2:53. With 1:36 left, Jerrod Wilkom finished the scoring at 13-10.

Laker goalie Kevin O'Donnell made just five saves in the win.

Senior Marc Leveroni (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) won 12 faceoffs for Potsdam.

The Bears finish up the season on Saturday when they host SUNY Cortland on Senior Day. Note the contest start time has been moved up to 3 p.m.
