NEW PALTZ, N.Y. — The Oswego State women's lacrosse team cruised to a 14-5 victory over New Paltz on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, Oswego improves to 6-4 on the season and an even 2-2 in SUNYAC play, while New Paltz falls to 4-6 overall and 0-4 in conference action.
Oswego came out strong, scoring four unanswered goals to begin the first half. New Paltz attempted to close the gap, bringing the score to 6-4 at halftime, but the Lakers dominated the second half. Oswego scored eight unanswered goals before the Hawks finally tacked on a goal with six seconds left in the game.
Brigid Regin opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at 27:03 and was the offensive spark for the Lakers, contributing throughout the contest. The junior scored half of Oswego's goals to set a new career-high. Teammates Riley Jaquin, Montana Garrett and Gemma O'Kane each contributed a pair of goals as well, while Teresa Shattuck added another.
Reigning Oswego State Athlete of the Week Angela Ponto played 55:10 in the net, stopping eight shots and allowing just four goals. Elianna Sanchez played the remaining 4:50, giving up one goal and making one save.
Oswego was nearly perfect in its clear attempts, with 22-of-23 successful attempts. The Lakers also controlled 16 of 21 draws on the afternoon.
At 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oswego wraps up its four-game road trip when it faces Fredonia.
