BOXSCORE ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia women's volleyball team took over sole possession of second place with a three-set sweep of Geneseo on Friday evening. In the third-and-final round of pool play at Oneonta, the Devils edged the Knights 25-23, 25-22, and 25-21.
Both teams entered the evening at 5-1 in the SUNYAC.Â
The Devils were down 20-12 late in the first set, but rallied for five-straight points to pull within three. They later trailed by four, 23-19, and finished with the final six points to claim the first set.
The Devils also closed out the in the third set -- and the match -- in similar fashion. Trailing 21-20, they scored the final five points for the win.
"There is simply no quit in this team," said head coach
Geoff Braun. "We overcame big deficits in the first and third sets. We didn't let them get their middles going much and it made it easier on our defense."
Kristen Stanek (Hamburg, N.Y. / Orchard Park) and
Kailey Falk (York, N.Y. / Our Lady of Mercy) led the way on offense, with 15 and 14 kills, respectively.
Rachel Aiello (Baldwinsville, N.Y. / C.W. Baker) added seven kills. The trio combined for 36 of the team's 41 kills.
Hallie Christopher (East Amherst, N.Y. / Clarence) was credited with 33 assists.
On the defensive side, Christopher had 21 digs, while Falk and
Courtney Poirier (West Seneca, N.Y. / West Seneca West) added 18 each. Aiello and
Rachel Poirier (West Seneca, N.Y. / West Seneca West) had nine each.
Emma Falk (York, N.Y. / Our Lady of Mercy) had four blocks.
The Devils take on Plattsburgh and New Paltz tomorrow to finish the SUNYACÂ portion of the schedule. At 6-1, the Devils trail only Brockport (7-0). Brockport takes on Buffalo State and Cortland tomorrow at Buffalo State.
Overall, Fredonia improved to 15-9. Geneseo now stands at 17-9 and 5-2 in the conference.
