Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Women's tennis makes it ten straight with win against Hartwick

Oneonta, NY – The Oneonta City women's tennis rival revved up on the Heissan '63 Courts on the campus of SUNY Oneonta as the Red Dragons welcomed in the Hartwick Hawks.

With a revised lineup today the doubles action got underway as freshman Rebecca Macdonald (Brooklyn/Leon M. Goldstein) and freshman Madeline Carswell (Albany/Bethlehem) played in the top spot.  Each playing without their regular doubles partners did not upset chemistry and were dominant in securing an 8-2 win.  Freshman Anna Hood (Oneida/Oneida) and freshman Giovanna Buccina (Syracuse/Westhill) were together again and put down an incredibly dominant performance with strong serving from both players and consistent net play scoring an 8-2 victory.  Former high school teammates and freshmen Amelia Wilson (Averill Park/Averill Park) and Ariel Loucks (Averill Park/Averill Park) showed their chemistry as close friends and took the Hartwick duo out recording an 8-1 triumph.

A 3-0 lead could not be chipped into by the Hawks and Hartwick lost on five of the six singles matches contested.  Macdonald handed her foe a 6-2, 6-1 drubbing hitting a lot of winners and passing shots complimented by her overpowering serve.  Wilson started in the third flight and was dominant before her opponent retired due to injury and gave the Red Dragons the team victory.   One of the feature matches on the afternoon was junior Emily Whitaker (Apalachin/Vestal) getting her first start in the main lineup and was down in each of her sets but fought back each time recording a 6-3, 7-5 dramatic win.  Freshman Sara Cayaban (Bellmore/Mepham) also got her second start in the main lineup at fifth flight and got valuable experience winning 6-1, 6-1.  Loucks was the benefit of a default at the sixth position and recorded another win for the Red Dragon singles lineup.  Back up in the number one position junior Danielle Swierczyna (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) played for the first time in her career in the top spot and got locked into a real battle with the Hawks top player.  Swierczyna won the first set 6-3 playing very consistent tennis.  As the second set transpired Swierczyna began to run out of steam.  However in typical fashion for her she fought on and found herself now in the third set super-tiebreaker.  Swierczyna succumbed in the finale 10-6 after going down 6-0.  She fought to get to 8-6 but could not get close out her Hartwick opponent out.  Swierczyna was absolutely valiant in what was an effort that unfortunately found herself on the short side from a very competitive Hartwick opponent.  The Red Dragons though ended the match on the plus side of an 8-1 win moving to 10-0 on the season.

Next up is their arch rival the New Paltz Hawks who have owned the Red Dragons for almost two decades.  Oneonta will try and stop them and gain an all-important SUNYAC victory.  The action begins on the on  campus at 3 PM on Friday, September 28th.
