SUNY New Paltz Field Hockey Gets Tripped Up By Vassar In Regular Season Finale

| By:
Box Score Poughkeepsie, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team fell on the road to Vassar College Saturday, 7-3, in its regular season finale.

The Hawks (6-11) yielded four straight goals in the matter of six minutes to the Brewers (11-6). Storm Sideleau gave Vassar the lead in the 19th minute and Megan Caveny, Alyssa More and Emily Poehlein added on at the 22:16, 22:38 and 23:51-minute marks, to push the advantage, 4-0.

Serena Capsello cut the deficit for SUNY New Paltz, scoring back-to-back goals in the 25th and 29th minute, with Hayley Kim picking up the assist on the second score.

Megan Caveny netted one more for the Brewers before the half and 19 seconds out of the break Dara Studnitzer notched Vassar's sixth to push its lead back to four.

Three minutes later, More knocked in another off an assist from Sideleau to cap the Brewers offensive day, while Justin O'Reilly scored her 18th of the season, assisted by Kim to cut the score, 7-3, in the 61st minute for the Hawks.

Vassar held the slight edge in shots, 20-19, while SUNY New Paltz earned eight penalty corners, to the Brewers five.

Capsello led the Hawks with six shots, and three on target, followed by Kim with five shots, Carly Croteau (three) and Gunter (two). O'Reilly, the team's leading scorer and point-leader, was held to one shot, which she scored.

Megan Gangewere made eight saves for SUNY New Paltz, while Paige Amico, Liz Rotolo and Madison Maguire all saw time in net for Vassar and combined for seven stops.

"We had our chances to attack and did a good job capitalizing," said Hawks coach Shanna Szablinski. "Defensively we struggled inside our circle. Moving forward we will be working on denying opportunities in our defensive circle, stepping up to the ball with confidence and being strong with our tackles."

SUNY New Paltz ends the regular season at 6-11, but its season is not over yet. The Hawks hit the road Tuesday to face No. 2 seed SUNY Oneonta at 4 p.m.  in the first round of the SUNYAC playoffs. The winner will take on the winner of No. 1 SUNY Cortland and No. 4 Geneseo in the conference championship Saturday.
