Women’s Basketball stumbles against Alfred, 73-66

BUFFALO, N.Y.— Alfred University outscored Buffalo State 20-12 in the fourth quarter, including closing the game on a 13-2 run, en route to a 73-66 victory to open the Betty Abgott Invitational held in the Sports Arena

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Grace Licata (Williamsville/Williamsville South) and Katie Villarini (Hamburg/Hamburg) led the Bengals with 12 points apiece, with Villarini chipping in six assists.
  • Princella McCullough (Rochester/Bishop Kearney) tallied her second double-double of the early season, finishing with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Liv LeBaron (Horseheads/Corning Painted Post) finished with 10 points and six rebounds.
  • Alfred jumped out to an early 13-6 lead but saw its lead slip away as the Bengals closed the first quarter on a 9-2 run to trim the lead to 17-15 after 10 minutes of play.
  • Buffalo State built off its momentum from the first quarter with an 18-9 run to take a 33-26 lead. The Saxons responded by ending the half on an 11-5 run to cut the lead to 38-37 at halftime.
  • Both teams traded points for the majority of the third frame as the lead remained at one point, 54-53 after 30 minutes of action.
  • Buffalo State used back-to-back layups from McCullough and Kaelee Lynch (Atwater/Buhack Colony) to take a 64-60 lead with just under four minutes to play.
  • The Saxons regrouped and closed the game on a 13-2 run to claim the win.
  • The Bengals shot 38 percent from the floor and only 55 percent from the charity stripe.
  • Alfred held a 48-44 edge in rebounding.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Alfred University will play Thiel College tomorrow at 1 p.m. for the Betty Abgott Invitational Championship.
  • Jamie Wilcox led the Saxons with 23 points and nine rebounds.
  • Katlyn Boland and Lyndsay McCoy each chipped in 13 points.

THE EARLY GAME
  • Thiel outscored Cazenovia 22-13 in the fourth quarter to claim a 71-60 victory in today's opening game.
  • Destiny Smith led the Tomcats with 22 points and 15 rebounds. Jess Vormelker chipped in 23 points and nine rebounds.
  • Danielle Caivana paced the Wildcats, finishing with 19 points, six rebounds and six assists.
