CANTON, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's volleyball team split a pair of matches on the final day of the Canton Classic on Saturday, defeating Cazenovia College, 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-9), at St. Lawrence University's Ronald T. Burkman Gymnasium before falling to Wells College, 3-1 (25-22, 18-25, 26-24, 25-18), at SUNY Canton's Roos House.

Plattsburgh State moves to 6-12 overall with the results and travels to SUNY Geneseo next weekend for the second State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Pool Play of 2017. The Cardinals face two-time defending conference champion The College at Brockport on Friday, Oct. 6, at 5 p.m. before taking on SUNY Cortland (12 p.m.) and Buffalo State (2:30 p.m.) on Saturday, Oct. 7. Cazenovia drops to 3-15 overall with the loss, while Wells rises to 11-7 overall with the win.
Plattsburgh State 3, Cazenovia 0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-9)
The Cardinals won with ease against Cazenovia in their first match of the day at St. Lawrence, hitting .294 as a team. Plattsburgh State floored 15 aces and had the lone block of the match. The Wildcats, meanwhile, were limited to .061 hitting.
Freshman middle hitter/right side
Michelle Simmons (Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly) keyed the Cardinal attack with a .619 hitting percentage, flooring 14 kills and committing just one error in 21 total attempts. Sophomore right side/setter
Brianna Coon (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) kept the offense running with 30 assists and added a career-high six service aces. Yasui defended 11 digs and served up five aces, while senior right side
Lexi Pascal (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) and Simmons combined for a block assist.
For Cazenovia, senior outside hitter/defensive specialist Kassondra Kreppein tallied five kills, while freshman setter/outside hitter Grace Torino distributed 14 assists. Sophomore outside hitter/right side Mary MacHugh and freshman outside hitter/right side Ashley Anastas recorded 12 and 10 digs, respectively.
Wells 3, Plattsburgh State 1 (25-22, 18-25, 26-24, 25-18)
Plattsburgh State dropped a tough battle with Wells in its final match of the event at Canton, with long rallies serving as the defining point of the contest. The two teams combined for 354 attack attempts during the match, with Wells hitting .215 and Plattsburgh State hitting .179.
The Cardinals posted a 9-4 advantage in blocks, while the Express held the upper hand in service aces (9-6) and digs (114-90).
Sophomore outside hitter/right side
Hunter Grotjohn (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) and Coon each finished with double-doubles for Plattsburgh State. Grotjohn landed a career-high 18 kills and added 19 digs, while Coon offered up a career-high 42 assists and a career-high-tying 11 digs. Simmons landed 12 kills and added seven total blocks (two solo, five assist), while Yasui defended a season-high 29 digs.
For Wells, sophomore outside hitter Jackie Allen, freshman right side/middle hitter Rachel Anderson and junior middle hitter Amanda Springer registered 19, 18 and 11 kills, respectively, while Allen completed the double-double with a match-high 31 digs. Senior setter Eliza Schwab also had a double-double with 31 assists and 11 digs, while senior outside hitter/libero Anuhea Leite-Ah Yo helped pace the back row defensively, too, with 26 digs.
