Bears handle Clarkson 90-75 to complete North Country sweep

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (4-1) defeated Clarkson University (2-3) 90-75 on Tuesday night. The victory gives the Bears a sweep of all three North Country rivals for the second year in a row. Senior captains Jayquan Thomas (Hollis, N.Y./Richmond Hill) and Danny Delsol-Lowry (Queens, N.Y./Queens High School of Teaching) led the Bears with 26 and 17 points, respectively. Freshman center Tyrese Baptiste (Brooklyn, N.Y./Eagle Academy II) scored 14 points and grabbed 16 boards for his third double-double in four games.

The Bears opened the contest on a 10-5 run over the first 2:52. Delsol-Lowry scored the first seven points and Thomas drained a 3-pointer to cap the run. Clarkson led 5-4 on a Matt Higgins three, but Delsol-Lowry countered with one of his own and Potsdam never trailed again. Roburt Welch got the Golden Knights within 14-12 with another shot from behind the arc, but Bears pulled away with a 15-6 run and led 31-18 at 9:56. Thomas provided seven of the points and junior forward Dante Viskovich (Massena, N.Y./Massena) and sophomore guard Isaiah Joseph (Harlem, N.Y/Izquierdo Health & Science Center) each hit threes. Potsdam continued to build its lead as the first half wound down. The Bears outscored Clarkson 24-21 the rest of the half. A three from freshman guard Brian Pod (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) with 49 seconds left extended the lead to 18 at 55-37 and after a final Clarkson bucket, Potsdam took a 55-39 advantage into the break. The Bears hit six of their seven 3-point attempts in the first 20 minutes.

Potsdam continued to roll in the second half, with the Golden Knights never getting within 11 points of the lead. Thomas led the charge with 14 points in the final 20 minutes alone. Baptiste added six points to his total. Two free throws from junior guard Colby Simpson (Queens, N.Y./Queens High School of Teaching) gave the Bears their largest lead of the contest at 90-70 with 1:48 to go. Clarkson scored the final five points, but had to settle with the 90-75 defeat.

Potsdam edged the Golden Knights in shooting, 47-percent to 46, and in rebounds 38-37.

Viskovich and freshman guard Isaac Oduro Jr. (Jamaica, N.Y./Christ the King) each finished with seven points.

Chris Hulbert led Clarkson with 22 points. Swedberg finished with 15 points and eight rebounds and Higgins had 11 points and six boards. Ryan Miles-Ferguson also reached double digits with 10 points.

The Bears are now off until Friday, December 6 when they head to SUNY New Paltz for their SUNYAC opener.
