CORTLAND, N.Y. – Junior Carly Stone (Syracuse/Jamesville-DeWitt) scored her fourth goal of the game one minute into overtime as the nationally 17th-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team defeated Clarkson, 11-10, Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at the Stadium Complex.

Sophomore Lexie Meager (Syracuse/West Genesee) matched Stone with a game-high four goals for the Red Dragons (1-0). Sophomore Brie Yonge (Penn Yan/Penn Yan Academy) recorded one goal and an assist on the game-winning score. Senior Katie Wolfe (East Amherst/Williamsville North) and freshman Hannah Lorenzen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) each netted a goal, and sophomore Molly Newton (Skaneateles) chipped in with two assists.

Freshman goalie Annie Casey (Bay SHore) made nine saves and collected three ground balls in her first collegiate start for Cortland. Wolfe also contributed three ground balls and three caused turnovers, Lorenzon scooped up three ground balls and senior Jaycie Annable (Navarino/Onondaga) and junioe Hailey Dobbins (Syracuse/CBA) added three ground balls and three draw controls apiece.

Junior Jayd Baytos (Watertown/Immaculate Heart) led the Golden Knights (1-1) with four goals. Sophomore Abby Collins (Syracuse/West Genesee) netted three goals, and sophomore Emma Andrews (Mexico/Mexico Academy) tallied one goal and one assist. Senior Taylor Collins (Syracuse/West Genesee) and sophomore Katie Sergeant (Ontario/Our Lady of Mercy) notched one goal each, and sophomore Lexi Smith (Deferiet/Carthage) recorded two assists.

Junior goalie Samantha Gladd (Rensselaer/Columbia) stopped 10 shots. Andrews and sophomore Stephanie Scaia (Syracuse/West Genesee) paced Clarkson with three ground balls each, while Baytos secured a game-high five draws.

Abby Collins opened the scoring in the game at 27:59, but the Red Dragons answered with three straight goals, two from Meager and one from Stone, to grab a 3-1 lead at 24:22. Andrews and Baytos scored back-to-back goals to tie the score before Lorenzen and Yonge pushed Cortland's advantage to 5-3 at the 16:06 mark with goals just 26 seconds apart. Abby Collins then sandwiched a pair of goals around two Stone tallies before Baytos closed the half with a free-position goal at 1:35 as the Red Dragons took a 7-6 lead into intermission.

Sergeant tied the game at 21:20 of the second half, and Taylor Collins scored from the free position less than a minute later to give Clarkson an 8-7 lead. Wolfe tied the game at 7:37, ending a 34:26 scoring drought for Cortland, and Meager put the Red Dragons ahead 9-8 from the free position with 6:31 to play. Baytos tied the game 25 seconds later, but Meager answered at 5:01 to give Cortland a 10-9 advantage. Baytos' fourth goal of the contest at 2:38 knotted the game at 10-all leading to a furious finish to regulation.

Clarkson won the ensuing draw, but Stone forced a turnover with 1:37 remaining. On the clear attempt, the Red Dragons mishandled a tough pass and the Golden Knights came up with the possession with 1:25 on the clock. Clarkson gave the ball back to Cortland on a turnover with less than a minute remaining. After a good Cortland clear, Newton earned a free-position attempt with less than 20 seconds to go. Gladd denied the attempt and barely prevented the ball from rickling over the goal line, and the gme headed to overtime.

Dobbins won the draw to open the extra session and the ball eventually went to Yonge on the right side. Stone cut hard to the cage, took a pass from Yonge and ripped a shot inside the left post for the game winner as the Red Dragons grabbed the 11-10 victory to open the season.
