SUNY New Paltz Women's Tennis Stays Unbeaten in SUNYAC Play with 8-1 Win over SUNY Plattsburgh

| By:
New Paltz, NY – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis team remained dominant in SUNYAC play so far this season with an 8-1 win over SUNY Plattsburgh.

All season long head coach Rob burley has preached strong doubles play to his team, but today the doubles play didn't start the way they hoped. Reigning SUNYAC Doubles Team of the Week Carol Tyson and Victoria Zezula were locked in a battle at first doubles while Taylor Mormile and Jessica Reich found themselves in a hole at third doubles. However, the tandem of Emi Lewis and Courtney Koran kept it together and ran away with an 8-0 victory at second doubles.

Courtney Koran with the volley"We could have been better at net," said Koran. "Luckily my partner and I got through some pretty tough games. We came back from some 0-40 down games so we felt pretty good about the win."

Tyson and Zezula found themselves in a back and forth match at first doubles, but were able to gain the momentum after the match being knotted at 5-5 and took the final three games to take the point for the Hawks.

Mormile and Reich were continually trying to get themselves back in the match at third doubles as they could be heard yelling come on after winning big points, but it was too late and they fell 8-3 to the Cardinals.

"I kind of felt like we went out with wrong attitude today and they frustrated us," said Bruley. "I was pleased with the way they found a way to win though. That's the most important thing."

Despite dropping the third doubles point the Hawks found their comfort in singles play and dominated early on in most matches. Jenna Grandville and Lindsay Haley came in fresh after not playing in the doubles lineup as they both took the first set 6-0 at third and sixth singles, respectively. Haley went on to win her second set 6-0 as well taking the Hawks lead to 3-1. Grandville took her second set 6-1 and put the Hawks one point away from clinching their second straight SUNYAC win.
 Team Huddle Before the Match
Jenna Grandville's sister, Brittany, clinched the match for SUNY New Paltz with a 6-1 6-0 victory at first singles. After that it was just icing on the cake for the Hawks in singles play as Carol Tyson, Courtney Koran, and Emi Lewis all finished off their singles matches with a win. Lewis had the match of the day as she squeezed out a 7-5 6-1 victory at fourth singles behind some powerful serving.

Plattsburgh head coach, Annmarie Curle, had nothing but praise for the Hawks. "We have the utmost respect for coach Bruley and his squad," said Curle. "Every one of those women that we play make us a better player and although scores in the past may have been severely lopsided we always come out of it better as a team. I'm happy with the way our young squad competed and hopefully some day the score will be a little bit more even."

"I hope we can use that preparation and just the way we went about our business as a learning curve," said Bruley. "We have to be on top of it more. I was happy with the way we got the points and got the 8-1 win, but there is certainly room for improvement."
