The SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team doubled its season goal output today with a four-spot against the visiting Oswego Lakers. The Red Dragons completely dominated the Lakers in blanking them 4-0. The win for Oneonta was its first of the season ending a seven-game winless streak while the Lakers fell to 4-2-1 overall and 1-1 in the SUNYAC.
Â
Oneonta (1-6-1/1-1 SUNYAC) didn't waste any time in getting the first goal on the scoreboard in today's match scoring in the second minute of play. Junior
Jess Downin (Franklin/Franklin Central) scored her first goal of the season capitalizing on a loose ball that was misplayed by the Oswego keeper. The play started when junior
Julie Steinhauer (East Syracuse/East Syracuse Minoa) collected the ball along the end line inside the box to the left of the goal. She sent the ball across into the goal area where Downin got just enough of it to send it trickling over the goalie and into the far corner.
Â
The Red Dragons outshot the Lakers 10-0 in the first half and 16-2 overall. Both of the shots by Oswego were from well outside the box and were easily managed by starting keeper
Emilie Mull (Marcy/Whitesboro) and
Melissa Muller (Holbrook/Sachem North), who played the final 16 minutes of the match. Mull returned to goal after being out for the last five games and picked up the win.
Â
Oneonta put the game out of reach with a pair of goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half. Steinhauer registered her second goal of the season in the 51
st minute on a half volley to the back of the goal off a crossing pass from sophomore
Christina Kornfeld (Mount Sinai/Miller Place). Kornfeld notched her second goal of the year eight minutes later unassisted on a shot from outside the box that found the upper right corner of the goal.
Â
The final goal of the game was a group effort off a corner kick. Senior
Emily Opalinski (East Amherst/Williamsville East) served the ball to the far side of the box where junior
Hannah Kaplan (Smithtown/Hauppauge) headed it into the goal area. Sophomore
Devyn Kilmeade (Northport/Northport), who had just entered the game, got her foot on the ball and lifted it over the goal line for her first tally of the season.
Â
Oneonta will now head to the road for the next three weeks beginning in Geneseo next Friday for a match against the Knights starting at 3pm.
