Red Dragons Lose at Nazareth, 15-14

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Goalie Brianna Rizzari registered 19 saves and Jamie Martin tallied four goals and one assist to lead the Nazareth women's lacrosse team to a 15-14 upset over nationally 15th-ranked Cortland Monday afternoon in non-conference action. The Red Dragons dropped to 5-3 with the loss, while the Golden Flyers evened their record at 4-4.

Senior Jaycie Annable (Navarino/Onondaga) led the Cortland offense with four goals. Sophomore Lexie Meager (Syracuse/West Genesee) tallied four points on three goals and one assist, junior Carly Stone (Syracuse/Jamesville-DeWitt) recorded two goals and one assist and sophomore Baylee Ojeda (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) netted two goals. Senior Katie Wolfe (East Amherst/Williamsville North) and sophomore Molly Newton (Skaneateles) each chipped in with one goal and one assist, and sophomore Brie Yonge (Penn Yan/Penn Yan Academy) notched a goal.

Freshman goalie Annie Casey (Bay Shore) made six saves and collected three ground balls for the Red Dragons. Meager won six draw controls, scooped up three ground balls and caused three turnovers.Wolfe secured seven draws, junior Hailey Dobbins (Syracuse/CBA) collected three ground balls and caused two turnovers and Annable recorded four ground balls.

Haley DeVona netted three goals for Nazareth, and Bridget Collins totaled five points on two goals and three assists. Kellie Byrne and Tori Blazey each scored twice, Katie Carroll registered one goal and one assist and Addilys Geitner added a goal. Blazey won six draws, and Vicki Arena caused three turnovers and scooped up two ground balls.

The game was close throughout the entire 60 minutes with the largest lead for either team being three goals. Cortland jumped out to a 3-1 advantage, but Nazareth netted five of the next six goals for a 6-4 lead at the 7:55 mark of the first half. The teams traded the next six goals before DeVona made it a 10-7 game heading into the break with a goal just eight seconds before the end of the half.

The Red Dragons eventually closed to within 13-12 with 10:58 to play, but the Golden Flyers scored two of the next three goals for a 15-13 lead with 3:38 on the clock. Annable made it a 15-14 game with nine seconds remaining, however, Nazareth won the ensuing draw control to seal the win.
