Men's Basketball Crowned SUNYAC Champions, Earn NCAA Tournament Automatic Bid

Brockport, NY – The SUNY Brockport men's basketball team was crowned the 2020 SUNYAC Champions on Saturday, defeating Potsdam 102-75. This is the program's first conference title since 2014, and ninth school history.

Head Coach Greg Dunne has now won his third SUNYAC Championship as the leader of the Green and Gold. In a postgame interview he voiced his gratitude for all parties involved on the special day, "We're super proud of our student body and how they came out – faculty and staff as well. This was a win for the entire community of Brockport."

After putting up a game-high 23 points, Tyler Collins was named the SUNYAC Championships MVP. Collins was incredible in both tournament wins to lead Brockport to its first title in six years. When asked how he felt after the game he stated, "This year we've been on an unbelievable run and to finally get over that hump and to win the championship, it's an unreal feeling."

Senior forward Justin Summers added his thoughts on what this conference title means to him and his illustrious career. "Coming into the game all I could think of was to go out with everything. This is my last season here, I have nothing to lose. I needed my brothers for this one." Summers was named to the SUNYAC All-Tournament team for his strong performance this weekend.

Averaging 15.5 points, five rebounds, and four assists in the conference tournament, Danny Ashley was given the nod for All-Tournament team as well. He posted 13 points and six boards, shooting 7-for-8 at the free throw line in the championship game.

Devante Hagins' relentless effort, passion, and intensity shined in the SUNYAC Finals as he was also named to the All-Tournament team. He had a double-double by halftime and finished with season-highs of 18 points and 13 rebounds. The junior also contributed with four assists, three steals, two blocks, and drew multiple charges on the defensive end.

Jahidi Wallace and Monte Stroman both scored double-digits as well, finishing with 14 and 10 points respectively. Leading by as many as 33 points in the game, Brockport's total of 102 is the team's second highest scoring output of the year. It also marks the first time since 2007 that a team has broken the 100-point mark in a SUNYAC Tournament game.

The Golden Eagles led from start to finish in the championship game, starting with an 11-2 lead four minutes after the opening tip. A quick Potsdam run would close the gap, but Brockport kept its foot on the gas. The team secured a double-digit lead with 7:17 before halftime and led by double figures the rest of the way. Devante Hagins crashed the offensive glass hard in the first., posting 14 points and 10 boards at halftime. The junior had a tip-in, buzzer-beater to put Brockport up 54-34 at the half.

When speaking about the first half of play Dunne mentioned, "I didn't think we played a great offensive half, and the guys kind of looked at me funny because we were up 20. We had 16 offensive rebounds in the first half and it just kind of showed how hard we were playing." Brockport's 16 boards on the offensive glass compared to Potsdam's 17 total rebounds demonstrated the team's hustle, which made up for shooting just 41.9% from the floor in the half.

As the second half got going, the Green and Gold advantage continued to grow as it led by 27 less than four minutes into the period. Tyler Collins and Danny Ashley continued to put the pressure on Potsdam, drawing fouls and getting to the line. In the second half alone, Brockport shot 18-for-24 at the charity stripe. In the game, Collins and Ashley shot a combined total of 16-for-20 at the line. This solid free throw shooting kept the Golden Eagles in control of the game, as they snagged a 33-point lead in the final minutes of regulation. The final horn sounded, and the celebration began as they were crowned champions.

Potsdam's Isaiah Brown and Tyrese Baptiste both were named to the SUNYAC All-Tournament team following the game. Brown finished with 20 points and six boards in the game, while Baptiste tallied 19 points and eight rebounds.

Brockport won the turnover battle, committing seven fewer giveaways in the title game. The team also outrebounded Potsdam, 48-37, snagging 21 offensive rebounds on the night. The Green and Gold shot a healthy 9-for-17 from beyond the arc and 31-for-39 at the foul line. Sharing the ball with a total of 18 assists, the team had six double-digit scorers.

Winning their 17th game in a row, the Golden Eagles improve to 24-3 overall, 13-0 at home, and earn an automatic entrance into the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. The NCAA Selection show will be aired Monday at 12:30 pm, revealing Brockport's first round opponent.
