POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam softball team (5-19, 2-8 SUNYAC) defeated the College at Brockport (12-14, 2-8 SUNYAC) 7-6 in nine innings in game one before falling 9-0 in game two. Senior pitcher
Samantha Hubinsky (Gansevoort, N.Y./South Glens Falls) was 4-for-7 for the Bears with a two-run homer, two runs scored and two RBI.
Game one started out roughly for Potsdam as the Golden Eagles scored four times in the top of the first. The big blow was a two-run double off the bat of senior catcher Karleigh Eaton (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott). Brockport also scored on a sacrifice fly and an error.
The Bears countered with a run in the bottom of the first. After Hubinsky, junior centerfielder
Brooke Falsion (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) and senior captain
Lauren Brace (Moriah, N.Y./Moriah) each led off with singles, sophomore left fielder
Lucy Condon (Kitchener, Ontario/St. David Catholic) hit a one-out single to center to make it 4-1.
Potsdam got even in the bottom of the second. Freshman designated player
Kayla Palmer (Chester, N.Y./Chester) led off with a double and moved to third on a fly out. Freshman shortstop
Grace Folmsbee (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook) knocked her in with a single to center. After Folmsbee was replaced by senior right fielder
Meghan Dougherty (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) on the base path via a fielder's choice, Hubinsky tied the game with a blast over the centerfield fence.
The Bears took the lead in the top of the third. Freshman third baseman
Sydney Miller (Hoosick Falls, N.Y./Hoosick Falls) singled and sophomore first baseman
Megan Fish (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North) came around to make it 5-4. Brockport tied the game in the top of the fifth with an infield hit from freshman second baseman Kacie Hubbard (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) that plated sophomore third baseman Alison Missavage (Maine-Endwell, N.Y./Maine-Endwell).
The Golden Eagles then jumped back in front in the top of seventh as junior right fielder Morgan Flamholtz (Beacon, N.Y./Beacon) drove in Missavage with a long foul sacrifice fly.
Four straight Brockport errors helped the Bears tie the game in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Falsion, Brace, Fish and Condon all reached due to miscues, with Falsion charging home to tie the game. However, the Bears could not push across the winner and the contest headed into extra innings.
Brace led off the bottom of the ninth with a single up the middle and Fish bunted her to second. Freshman
Shelby Van Epps (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) pinch ran for Brace and she moved to third on a single from Condon. Van Epps then scored the game-winner on a wild pitch.
Hubinsky shook off her rough start to go 8.2 innings, allowing just four earned runs on 15 hits and a strikeout. However, it was Palmer (2-1) notching the victory despite pitching just a third of an inning.
Brockport freshman hurler Julia Palopoli (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) was roughed up for three runs on six hits in 1.1 innings. Senior Amanda Colon (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) (1-7) fared a bit better, allowing three earned runs on eight hits, while striking out four over seven innings.
Hubinsky was 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. Condon was 2-for-5 with an RBI and Palmer and Folmsbee were each 2-for-4, Condon with an RBI and Palmer with a run.
Game two didn't go the Bears way. After getting a run in the first, the Golden Eagles took advantage of four Potsdam errors in the third to score five runs. Brockport tacked on three more in the fourth and shut down the Bears for the 9-0 victory.
Golden Eagles senior pitcher Becky Knorr (Greece, N.Y./Greece Arcadia) (4-5) went the distance, scattering just two hits and striking out three over five innings.
Fish (1-5) allowed six runs, just one earned, and five hits in three innings. Junior
Alissa McCauley (Malone, N.Y./Franklin Academy) allowed three runs on four hits in the final two innings.
Falsion was 1-for-2 with a triple and Folmsbee was 1-for-1 with a walk. Eaton was 1-for-2 with two runs and three RBI for Brockport and Flamholtz was 1-for-3 with a run and two RBI.
The Bears keep their marathon going tomorrow afternoon when they head to Plattsburgh for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
