Two-Out Rally Gives SUNY New Paltz Baseball Sweep over SUNY Purchase

| By:
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 After dropping its season opener to NYU 4-2, the State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team bounced back in a big way with a doubleheader sweep of SUNY Purchase 9-2 and 6-2 thanks to a five-run two-out rally in the second game.

GAME 1:
The Hawks opened up the scoring in the top of the second inning when sophomore catcher Zachary Warenius ripped a single through the left side allowing senior co-captain Dwayne Page to score giving SUNY New Paltz a 1-0 lead. The bats stayed hot for the Hawks in the next inning as junior shortstop Ryan Frost led off with a single and then senior center fielder Nick DePietro hit a bomb to center field that he stretched into an RBI triple. Senior third baseman Jake Williams drove in DePietro with a hard ground ball to second base pushing the lead to 3-0.

Justin Stybel got the start for the Hawks and was relentless on the mound. Stybel pitched three innings and allowed zero hits while striking out four.

With the Panthers still in reach, SUNY New Paltz put the game out of reach in the fourth inning adding on four more runs. After Page reached on an error, Warenius found his sweet spot again through the left side and moved Page to third base. Junior left fielder Danny Campbell then laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt, which scored the run and allowed him to reach first safely. Two batters later senior third baseman Jake Williams hit a triple scoring Frost and Julian Francisco to give the Hawks a 7-0 lead. The next inning SUNY New Paltz kept the ball rolling and added two more insurance runs with an RBI single by Page and and Warenius scoring on an error.

The pitching and defense for the Hawks continued to not let anything past them with junior right handed pitcher Mike Delio coming on and taking the team no-hitter through the fifth inning. Sophomores James Magnuson and John LoCurto finished up the game with one inning and one earned run allowed each.

Williams led the offense with three RBI's off of one triple while Frost and Warenius both went 2-for-3 with with one RBI and two runs scored. Page also chipped in a solid day at 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored.

GAME 2:
SUNY New Paltz was unable to keep the offensive momentum going in the second game as the lefty pitcher, Dom Micara, was able to keep the Hawks on their heels in the batters box.

Ryan Votypka got the nod on the mound and allowed the Panthers to strike first in the second inning. However, SUNY New Paltz answered right back in the top of the third inning with a DePietro RBI single up the middle scoring Francisco. Unfortunately the lead didn't last long with SUNY Purchase jumping ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the third.

The pitching and defense remained strong through the sixth inning, highlighted by a couple great plays by Williams at third base to keep the Panthers from adding to their lead.

31393In the top of the seventh the Hawks were down to their final three outs, and after the first two batters going down, it was all on Francisco to keep the game alive. The sophomore stepped up and hit a rocket over the right fielders head and Francisco's speed turned the big hit into a triple. With Francisco on third, Frost put his body on the line and took a pitch to the back. One pitch later the winning run was on second base after Frost stole second. DePietro was up to bat and drove a ground ball in the gap, but the Panther shortstop got to the ball and had a chance at making a play at first. However, DePietro's speed forced an errant throw and both Francisco and Frost crossed the plate. Although the lead was now with SUNY New Paltz for the first time in the game, they didn't let up and added three more runs to push the lead to 6-2.

Sophomore Anthony Amoroso had come on in relief in the sixth inning, and after seeing his teammates take the lead told head coach Arlan Freeman that he wanted to close out the game. He did just that striking out the first batter and forcing the next two into fly outs.

"It was very nerve racking," said Freeman. "We needed to do a better job early in the game, their pitcher was doing a great job working us to the outside. I think we brought the momentum from the 9-2 win and thought we were just going to do the same thing. Julian Francisco had an opportunity today and he took advantage of it. He absolutely smoked that ball over the right fielder's head and got us going. I told the guys that's what great teams do, great teams find a way to win that game."

Anthony Pantano finished 2-for-3 in the game one RBI and one run scored. DePietro and Williams also chipped in one RBI and one run scored.

Votypka threw five innings allowing five hits and two earned runs, while Amoroso picked up the win in relief with two innings pitched and no hits or runs allowed.
