Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Gritty game between Brockport and Buffalo state ends in 1-1 tie

BROCKPORT, N.Y.— The College at Brockport men's soccer team competed hard against an aggressive Buffalo State unit on Saturday, but the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

The tie moves Brockport to 5-2-2 on the year and 1-0-1 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUYNYAC) play. The Bengals are now 7-1-1 on the season and 1-0-1 in league play.

The Golden Eagles played a tough first half of soccer against the Bengals. The best opportunity came off of a free kick by Jason Hayes that hit the cross-bar. AJ Sinclair had an opportunity off the rebound, but his shot went just wide of the goal. Both teams were even with four shots, but neither defense would budge. The score remained 0-0 going into the break.

The second half saw similar back-and-forth, gritty soccer. After almost 68 minutes, Chris Aherne gave Brockport a 1-0 lead, thanks a flick on header by Connor DeSantis. The Bengals however, would net the equalizer in the 80th minute to bring the score to 1-1. Neither team was able to score another goal and the game would head into overtime.

The Green and Gold would battle in extra time, with the defense holding the Bengals to three shots in all of overtime. The Brockport offense fought, but were not able to net a game winner in either overtime period as the game would end in a 1-1 draw.

"Our competitive mentality and intensity was excellent," commented head coach Gary LaPietra. "We made a couple of critical mistakes but the team respoonded very positively."

Goalkeeper Joseph Romano faced 16 shots in 110 minutes of play and finished the game with six saves.

The Golden Eagles are on the road on Sept. 29 as they travel to SUNY New Paltz for a 3 p.m. match, as they continue SUNYAC Conference play.
