ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Rowan (N.J.) pushed the Fredonia women's volleyball team to the limit, but the Devils came away with a 3-2 victory at the N.Y. Regional Invitational at the University of Rochester on Friday. Fredonia won the tie-breaking set 15-13 to improve to 19-9 this season.
"Rowan is a good team," said head coach
Geoff Braun. "They are big up front and have a strong offense. They frustrated our hitters and put a lot of pressure on us. They forced us into playing their game for a while in the middle of the match but we did a great job getting back to our game and pulling out the win."
Fredonia won sets one, two, and three. Scores were
25-17, 16-25, 25-16, 19-25, and 15-13.
Kailey Falk (York/Our Lady of Mercy) and
Kristen Stanek (Hamburg, N.Y. / Orchard Park) again paced the offense with 20 and 14 kills, respectively.
Rachel Aiello (Baldwinsville/Baldwinsville) had 12 kills.
Hallie Christopher (East Amherst, N.Y./Clarence) had 53 assists and led the team with three service aces. Aiello also had a trio of aces.
On the defensive side,
Emma Booth (Hamburg, N.Y. / Frontier) had four blocks. Aiello had 18 digs and
Courtney Poirier (West Seneca/West Seneca West) and
Rachel Poirier (West Seneca/West Seneca West) chipped in 16 digs apiece.
Rowan fell to 12-17.
The Devils take on Montclair State (N.J.) and Nazareth on Saturday.
Next weekend, the Devils travel to Brockport as the No. 2 seed to compete in the SUNYAC Tournament.
