Felicia Torres (Middletown, N.Y./Pine Bush) hit a walk-off, two-run double in the bottom of the seventh in game one of a non-conference doubleheader to help the Plattsburgh State softball team defeat St. Lawrence University, 5-4. The Cardinals then topped the Saints, 9-0, in game two, with freshman third baseman
Bella Spadinger (Loudonville, N.Y./Shaker) providing a game-ending two-run home run in the home half of the sixth.
Plattsburgh State rises to 12-11 overall with the wins and next hosts SUNY Potsdam in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader on Saturday, April 14, at 12 p.m. St. Lawrence drops to 8-8 overall with the losses and next hosts Ithaca College in its Liberty League-opening doubleheader on Saturday, April 14, at 1 p.m.
Game 1: Plattsburgh State 5, St. Lawrence 4
With the Cardinals down to their final strike with runners on second and third, Torres played the role of hero in game one, ripping a ball to deep center field on a 2-2 count to plate the tying and winning runs.
Senior left fielder
Dominique Zummo (Commack, N.Y./St. Anthony's) drew a walk with one out in the seventh before junior catcher
Jennifer Groat (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) put runners on second and third with a double to right field. After the Saints recorded a strikeout, Torres ended the game with a double to center.
Plattsburgh State began its rally to overcome a four-run deficit in the sixth, as senior first baseman
Kelsey Gage (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) doubled to right center to bring in junior pinch runner
Jennifer Sarcone (Centereach, N.Y./Newfield) before Torres plated Gage with a single to center field. Torres' sixth-inning RBI base knock made it a 4-3 game.
Senior third baseman
Jackie Decker (Adams, N.Y./South Jefferson) opened scoring in the home half of the first with an RBI single to left field, while the Saints scored four unanswered runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings. Freshman catcher Skylar Hein tied the score at 1-all in the third with a sacrifice fly before sophomore first baseman Angelina Carney gave the Saints the lead two batters later with an RBI single to left. Junior second baseman Elle Gray converted on a 3-2 pitch with an RBI single up the middle in the fourth before Hein drove in a run on a bloop single to no-man's land behind third base in the top of the sixth.
Seven different Cardinals had a hit in game one, led by Torres' 2-for-4 performance at the plate that included three RBI and a double. Gray and junior right fielder Mylea Mann each had multiple hits for the Saints.
Senior pitcher
Katie Pitkin (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) drew the start in the circle, yielding four runs (one earned) on eight hits and six walks while striking out five in 5 2/3 innings of work, before senior pitcher
Taylor Smith (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) took over in relief. Smith earned the win, holding St. Lawrence hitless and scoreless while striking out two in 1 1/3 innings of action. Sophomore pitcher Madison Mitchell shouldered the loss in relief for the Saints.
Game 2: Plattsburgh State 9, St. Lawrence 0 (6 inn.)
Plattsburgh State pounded out 13 hits in the nightcap, giving St. Lawrence its first shutout defeat of the season. Spadinger stole the show in the contest, going 3-for-4 with five RBI and one run scored while ending the game with a two-run homer to left field in the sixth.
Freshman second baseman
Shannon Myles (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) kicked off scoring in the second with an RBI single up the middle. Groat plated Zummo with an RBI single up the middle in the third before Spadinger drove in two just three batters later to hand the Cardinals a 4-0 advantage.
Spadinger plated Torres with a double to right center in the fifth to give Plattsburgh State a 5-0 lead before the Cardinals enacted the run rule with four runs in the sixth. Groat struck first with a sacrifice fly to center field, while senior right fielder
Amanda Tantillo (Florida, N.Y./S.S. Seward) pushed across Zummo with a single to right field. Two batters later, Spadinger took a 1-2 pitch and launched it over the fence in left field to end the game.
Beyond Spadinger, Groat, Tantillo and junior catcher
Anna Fisher (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) each had multiple hits as well. Groat, who tallied at least one hit in each contest on Wednesday, stretched her hit streak to 23 to start the season and is now batting at a .562 clip. Sophomore center fielder Taylor Armijo was the lone Saint to post two hits in the nightcap.
Sophomore pitcher
Rhea Pitkin (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) tossed a four-hit shutout, scattering four hits while striking out two. Two St. Lawrence pitchers threw in the loss, with junior pitcher Allie Courtwright being the pitcher of record.
