Deja Vu as Cortland Earns Comeback 2-1 Win over Buffalo St.

CORTLAND, N.Y. – For the second straight game, the Cortland women's soccer team rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit to claim a SUNYAC win. The Red Dragons improved to 7-2-3 overall and 4-2 in the conference with their 2-1 win versus Buffalo St. (3-9-1, 0-5) Saturday afternoon at the Stadium Complex White Field.

Junior Vanessa Romero (Valhalla) tallied both of Cortland's goals, and freshman Casey Schmitt (Port Jefferson Station/Mount Sinai) collected an assist. Freshman goalie Danika Svendsen (Stillwater) started her 12th consecutive game, making one save in the opening 45 minutes. Junior Abby Miller (Andover) picked up the win, stopping two shots in the second half.

Senior Lindsay Mahoney (Port Jefferson/St. John the Baptist) scored Buffalo St.'s goal with freshman Kyndal Hetzel (Hilton) assisting on the score. Sophomore goalie Taylor Carillo (Pine Bush) registered three saves.

Despite controlling much of the play in the first half, Cortland was outshot by the Bengals, 3-2. Buffalo St. took a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute when Mahoney beat Svendsen to a 50-50 ball served by Hetzel in the box and tapped a shot that barely edged over the goal line.

In the second half, the Red Dragons again dominated play, holding a 12-2 shot advantage. Cortland broke through to tie the game in the 60th minute, Romero possessed the ball on the left side of the box, dribbled around two Buffalo St. defenders and slid a shot under Carillo for her third goal of the season. Romero then netted the game-winning goal in the 73rd minute. Schmitt lofted a pass to the right side of the box and Romero one-timed a 15-yard shot over Carillo.

The Bengals managed their two shots in the 73rd and 84th minutes, but Miller easily made saves on senior Paige Bly's (Kings Park) long free kick and Mahoney's strike from 25 yards out.
