Softball claims sixth-straight, earns SUNYAC sweep against Potsdam

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Buffalo State held Potsdam scoreless for 10 of the 14 innings and converted 16 hits into 12 runs in a two-game sweep over the host Bears today, using a three-run top of the seventh innings to win 8-4 in the first game, before taking the late game by a 4-1 count.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Alyssa Nichy (Depew/Depew) paced the Bengals' offense in the opening game, going 2 for 4 with a 3-run homerun, four RBIs and two runs scored.
  • Oriana Castello (Pearl River/Nanuet) finished 2 for 3 from the plate with a walk and an RBI, while Julia Blujus (Amherst/Sacred Heart) went 2 for 5 with a run scored.
  • Chelsea Davis (Lancaster/Lancaster), Taylor Benton (Niagara Falls/Niagara Wheatfield) and Hannah Dunlap (Batavia/Oakfield-Alabama) each also recorded a hit for the Bengals and finished with a combined two RBIs and three runs scored.
  • Buffalo State sprinted out of the gates by scoring two runs on two hits in the first inning and followed it up with three runs on two hits in the top of the second inning to take an early 5-0 lead.
  • Potsdam slowly chipped away at the deficit by scoring a run in the bottom of the third and fourth innings to trim the lead to 5-2 after four innings.
  • After stalling the Bengals' offense in the top of the fifth innings, the Bears continued its momentum by scoring two more runs on three hits to cut the advantage to 5-4.
  • Buffalo State used a hit by pitch and a walk to put two runners on, with two outs, in the top of the seventh, and were rewarded as Nichy belted her first collegiate homerun to push the lead back to 8-4.
  • The Bengals were able to overcome a leadoff single in the bottom of the frame to preserve the win.
  • Emma Richard (Grand Island/Grand Island) earned the win on the mound for the Bengals, giving up four runs on five hits in four innings of work.

  • Nichy and Dunlap each finished 1 for 3 with an RBI, while Sydney McIntosh (Buffalo/Kenmore West) went 1 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored.

  • Buffalo State's current six-game winning streak is the longest since the 2012 season.
