Lakers Score 17 in the Third Inning to Rout Fisher

PITTSFORD, N.Y. - The Oswego State baseball team put on an offensive show with 17 runs during the third inning of a 34-12 victory over No. 27 St. John Fisher on Tuesday afternoon.  The margin of victory was even more impressive since the Cardinals entered the game as the top-ranked team in the New York Region while the Lakers were sitting in third. The team improves their record to 22-11 while Fisher falls to 25-11.

Oswego's offense got off to a good start in the first inning when Mike Dellicarri singled to drive in Ryan Enos who had reach by error and advanced to second.  John Barnes singled in the next at-bat and Myles Kutscher doubled to bring in two more runs and put the Lakers up 3-0.  Fisher responded with six runs in the bottom of the second to take a momentary lead.

In the top of the third, Oswego would send twenty batters to the plate while scoring their biggest single inning run-total of the season.  The inning was highlighted by three-run homeruns by John Barnes and Lukas Olsson, as well as a three-run triple by shortstop Robert Donnelly.  Junior Brandon Nicholson reached base three times in the inning with two singles and a hit-by-pitch at-bat.

The fifth inning was another big inning for Oswego when Nicholson, Dellicarri and Kutscher walked to load the bases.  Kevin Hylas singled in two runs and advanced to second on the throw.  Olsson walked to load the bases again and a double by second baseman Rocco Leone and a triple by Jake Walsh would add five more runs to the Laker lead.

A new Oswego program record of 34 runs scored in a game was achieved in a four-run eighth inning.  Zach Whelan doubled to lead off and Brad Wroblewski singled to put runners on first and third.  Fred Lucas singled to score Whelan and put runners back on the corners and Nick Chilson was hit by a pitch to load them up.  A Hylas double and Emmanuel Olivo single would plate the final three runs.  The previous mark of 31 runs scored was set during the 2001 season in a 31-3 win over Medaille College.

Offensively, Barnes had a monster day in going 4-for-5 with four runs scored and notching five RBI.  Hylas was 3-for-4 with four RBI and both Dellicarri and Olsson scored four times apiece.

Oswego used ten pitchers in the game with each getting limited action to keep everyone available for this weekend's action.  Brian Nolan and Quinn MacDonald each held the Cardinals scoreless while Ronald Loomis (1-1) picks up the win with 1.2 innings of one-run ball.

The baseball team gets back in action on Thursday at 3:30pm when they face New Paltz in the SUNYAC Baseball Championship Tournament hosted by SUNY Cortland.
