BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport softball team split a pair of State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) games against Buffalo State Thursday afternoon, losing game one 5-3 and taking game two 9-8. The Golden Eagles move to 14-18 (4-14 SUNYAC) on the year, where the Bengals fall to 11-14 (9-5 SUNYAC).
Game 1: L, 5-3
Brockport fell behind early when Buffalo State took an early 2-0 lead when they blasted a two-run homerun in the top of the first. The Golden Eagles chipped away at the lead in the bottom of the second, when
Morgan Flamholtz ripped a double to center field that sent
Lindsay Wachna home, to now trail 2-1.
The Green and Gold claimed a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third as
Meghan Cullen sent a single up the middle of the field, which scored
Kacie Hubbard.
Casey Danko answered next when she flied out to right field which sent
Penny Lenard home to take the lead. Brockport buckled down defensively, but slipped in the fifth inning as the Bengals scored three runs to take a 5-3 lead. The Golden Eagles picked up the pace in the final two innings but could not score any runs late to take back the lead as they lost, 5-3.
Cullen and Flamholtz led the offense in game one with two hits apiece and a RBI.
Amanda Colon pitched 4.2 innings allowing five runs and striking out one.
Game 2: W, 9-8
Brockport started hot in game two as they jumped out to an early 5-1 lead through the first inning. Wachna got the scoring started when she ripped a three-run homer to pull ahead 3-1. Hubbard kept the offense rolling with a single up the middle to score
Alison Missavage and
Karleigh Eaton. The Golden Eagles locked down defensively over the next five innings and allowed one run and three hits. The Green and Gold found some trouble in the top of the sixth inning when Buffalo State added two runs to now trail 5-4.
Brockport fell apart in the top of the seventh as they allowed four runs to fall behind 8-5, with one at-bat to go. After back-to-back errors by the Bengals, Missavage capitalized on the opportunity and smoked two-run RBI to left center to cut the deficit to 8-7. With runners on second and third, Hubbard knocked a single up the middle that scored two runs to win the game by a final score of 9-8.
Hubbard dominated in game two going 4-4 with four RBI, where Wachna ended with three RBI.
Julia Palopoli pitched the first six innings and allowed five runs, while striking out three.
Becky Knorr pitched the final inning, while claiming the win.
The Brockport softball team is back in action tomorrow at home for senior day as they face SUNY Geneseo, with the first game slated to start at 3 p.m.
