Devils close Florida trip with 10-4 record

AUBURNDALE, N.Y. -- Fredonia took Game 1 over No. 12 ranked Oswego, before dropping the final two games of the series to close out its trip to Central Florida. The Devils now stand at 10-4 on the season..

The teams split Friday's doubleheader. The Blue Devils won the opener, 6-5, with two runs in the last of the ninth, then dropped the second game, 9-0. Oswego rolled to a 14-5 win Saturday.  They will return north for the scheduled home opener Wednesday afternoon vs. Medaille. That'll be followed with a three-game SUNYAC series next weekend at New Paltz.

Here's a recap of the Oswego series:

Friday, March 16
GAME 1 -- Fredonia 6, Oswego 5: The winning rally began after two were out in the last of the ninth inning. Joshua Crocetti (Rochester, N.Y. / Hilton) and Joseph Coene (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) had back-to-back singles. With Derek Fie (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) batting, Crocetti scored on an error by the shortstop and Coene scored on a mad dash from first base when the centerfielder over ran the ball. Luke Kuczewski (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) pitched a complete-game four-hitter to improve to 3-0. He struck out eight and walked one. Patrick Sheehan (West Seneca, N.Y./Orchard Park) was 4 for 4 with two RBI, Steve Zaprowski (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) tripled and singled twice. Coene and J.T. Angora (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) had two singles each.

GAME 2 -- Oswego 9, Fredonia 0 (7 inn.): The Blue Devils managed just two hits in the nightcap -- a single by Angora followed by a double by Daniel Goodbread (Tully, N.Y./Tully) leading off the fourth. After Coene walked to load the bases, Oswego's Robert Donnelly struck out the next three batters to preserve a 3-0 lead. Donnelly went the distance and finished with seven strikeouts. Ryan Landers (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport), the first of four Fredonia pitchers, was tagged with the loss.

Saturday, March 17
GAME 3 -- Oswego 14, Fredonia 5:
The Blue Devils jumped out 3-0 in the first. Zaprowski started the rally with a single. Sheehan, Angora, and Goodbread followed with consecutive RBI doubles. The Lakers drew even with three runs in the top off the second off starter Pierce Gardon (Colden,N.Y. / Holland). They added four in the fourth off losing pitcher Nick Ciraolo (Clarence, N.Y. / Clarence), and kept adding to their lead against a parade of Blue Devils relievers. Only Eddie Wasnock (Barker,N.Y. / Barker) went unscathed; he pitched a scoreless ninth inning. In addition, Bailey Gauthier (Camillus, N.Y. / West Genesee) struck out seven of the 15 batters he faced. Offensively for Fredonia, Sheehan and Crocetti each had three hits and Zaprowski had two. Sheehan's hits consisted of two doubles and a triple.

"We used a lot of new faces on the mound during our first 14 games," said head coach Matt Palisin, "and came out with 10 wins. If we can get our young guys working ahead in the count, and improve as they adjust to the college game, we feel we can beat anybody. There is no quit in this team, and we have had a new hero every day. We've won all the close games and we're looking forward to keeping our momentum up north."
