NEW PALTZ, N.Y.—The College at Brockport men's basketball team opened State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play Friday night against SUNY New Paltz, winning by a score of 79-71.
The fourth straight win moves Brockport to 4-1 on the year and 1-0 in SUNYAC play, while the Hawks fall to a 1-4 record and 0-1 in conference competition.
The game began neck-and-neck with the Green and Gold holding a one point advantage, 8-7, at the 13:23 mark. A 9-2 run, thanks to a three pointer by
Dwayne Daniel, back-to-back layups by
Michael O'Hara and a layup by
Tyler Collins, opened the game up and gave the unit a 17-9 lead. The Hawks stayed within seven points until another Golden Eagle run extended the lead. Big men O'Hara and
Justin Summers combined for 28 first half points, shooting 10-of-15 from the field and 15-of-17 from the free throw line to give the team a 40-24 lead into the break.
Brockport maintained a consistent 15-point advantage, until a late 11-2 run by the Hawks trimmed the lead to just five with 17 seconds left in regulation. However, made free throws by
Davonte Jones and
Hamed Shamseldin helped ice the game and give the Green and Gold a 79-71 victory.
Two Golden Eagles finished with career marks in points and rebounds. Summers finished the night with 24 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double, while O'Hara knocked in 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to contribute a double-double of his own.
Brockport is back in actions Saturday, Dec. 2 when they face off against Oneonta State for a 3 p.m. semi-final rematch.
