Yudin pitches shutout as Devils split

FREDONIA, N.Y.  -- Fredonia sophomore right-hander Katie Yudin (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) pitched a two-hitter as Fredonia defeated Potsdam, 6-0, in the first game of a SUNYAC softball doubleheader Saturday at Blue Devil Field. Potsdam turned back a Fredonia rally and won the nightcap, 4-3.

Yudin walked two and struck out four while winning her fourth game of the season. Senior first-baseman Katelyn Dennis (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) provided Yudin with all the support she needed with a two-run homer in the last of the first. It was the 12th career homer by Dennis, a Fredonia team record.

The Blue Devils (8-19-1 overall, 3-9 SUNYAC) combined for 11 hits and scored in every inning but the fourth. Dennis, freshman Makenzie Keeler (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville DeWitt), junior Cassie Herman (Maybrook, N.Y./Valley Central), senior Lauren Pixley (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier), and freshman Megan Maull (Aurora, N.Y./Aurora) each had a pair of hits. Among them were doubles by Pixley and Maull, and a triple by Keeler.

Potsdam scored three runs in the first and one in the second to take a 4-0 lead in the second game against sophomore right-hander Sam Seegar (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Starpoint). The Blue Devils broke through for one run in the fourth on an RBI single on Keeler, then scored two unearned runs in the last of the seventh, only to strand the tying run at second base.

The Blue Devils managed just six hits off winning pitcher Megan Fish, including a double and a single by junior Rhianna Paoletti (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore).

Fredonia players wore pink jerseys and socks as part of their annual Strike Out Cancer game. They also placed signs on the fence with the names of cancer survivors for whom they were playing, Proceeds of a silent raffle will be donated to the Relay for Life of Chautauqua County.

Dennis was recognized by her teammates for collecting her 100th career hit earlier in the week vs. Geneseo. She is the 12th Fredonia player to reach the milestone and with three hits Saturday tied Lauren Larson for 11th on the team career list.

The Blue Devils are back in action at noon Sunday when Plattsburgh visits Blue Devil Field.
