Box Score New Paltz, NY – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team couldn't overcome a seven-goal first half deficit and fell on the road to Buffalo State, 15-5, Saturday at Coyer Field.
The Bengals (7-6 overall, 3-1 SUNYAC) had the edge in shots (30-22) and turnovers (22-17) over the Hawks (4-7, 0-5), but the game was even in the draw circle with each team winning 11 apiece.
Keydy Espinoza came down with the opening draw control for SUNY New Paltz and
Tara Bovich quickly capitalized with a goal just 30 seconds into the game.
The lead was short-lived however, as Buffalo State answered with seven-straight goals in the following 25 and a half minutes before Bovich put an end to the run with a free position goal with 6 minutes, 31 seconds remaining in the game. The Bengals then netted two more before the half was up and took a 9-2 advantage into the half.
Amy Hofer cut into Buffalo State's lead with a free position goal and
Rachael Purtell added another about four minutes later to get the Hawks within six with 19:26 remaining.
A four-goal run ensued for the Bengals to create a larger cushion and SUNY New Paltz couldn't climb out of the hole.
Taylor Russell added the Hawks' fifth and final goal with about five minutes remaining, but the Bengals added one more to solidify the 10-goal win.
"When there is a difference there are choices," said Hawks coach
Keith Detelj. "We have to be more discipline in those opportunities for those choices to go in our favor."
Purtell added three caused turnovers, four ground balls and a draw control to her stat line, while Russell recorded three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Espinoza was critical in the circle, finishing with a team-high five draw controls, while
Sarah Raynock and Hofer added two draw controls each.
Nicole Sheintul played the full 60 minutes in goal and totaled 10 saves on 25 shots on net.
