Baseball Thrashes New Paltz

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA- The Alfred State Baseball team travelled down to Virginia Beach and went 1-1 on the Saturday double header, losing to Virginia Wesleyan 6-3 and defeating SUNY New Paltz 14-3. 

In Game 2:

 

Alfred State showed great toughness bouncing back in game 2 of the day. The Pioneers run ruled New Paltz in the 7th.  New Paltz got out to a 2-1 lead on a passed ball and a double in the 2nd inning. Alfred State started a hitting remain in the bottom of the 2nd and never looked back. Aidan Murphy (Syracuse, NY/ Coracan) Smoked a double to center to tie the game at 2. The Pioneers stacked on 5 more runs in the 3rd with RBI singles from Caleb Walker, Devin Mersmann and Bobby Sellers. In the 6th Tyler Korsky (Elmira, Thomas A Edison HS) hit his first home run as a Pio, crushing a ball over the center field wall. Devin Mersmann (Frontier, Frontier HS) hit his first home run of the season as well. Mersmann was 3-3 in the game. Connor Kiefer (Buffalo, City Honors) Put the icing on the cake, smashing a 2-run home run down the line to end the game. The Pioneers ended the game with 17 hits. Jon White (Clarence, Clarence HS) Stayed sharp, absolutely carving through New Paltz lineup. White was vintage Johhny White once again, throwing the 7 inning CG, striking out 6 only allowing 2 earned runs.

 

In Game 1:

 

Alfred State dropped the morning game 6-3 vs Virginia Wesleyan, The Pioneers were down 2-1 early in the 4th inning until Caleb Walker (Deposit, NY/Deposit) crushed an opposite field home run. Ryan Bailey (Union Springs, NY / Union Springs) had a solid start for the Pioneers going 5.2 innings striking out 4. The Pioneer defense made 5 errors behind which was too much to overcome. Chris Mattoon (Elmira, NY/ Elmira) did a great job in relief pitching 2.1 innings, only giving up 2 hits.

 

The Pioneers will head back home on Sunday to get ready for a Wednesday Afternoon game against RIT.
