Buffalo State downs Bears in SUNYAC battle

BUFFALO, N.Y.—Buffalo State (6-5, 2-0 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (4-6, 1-2 SUNYAC) 10-4 on Saturday afternoon. Senior captain Rachael Huntley (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) led the Bears with two goals and an assist. Sophomores Alli Stark (Walworth, N.Y./Gananda) and Lane Perl (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) also scored for Potsdam.
 
The Bengals struck quickly with two goals in the first 1:35. Nina Schaefer scored at 28:46 on a free-position attempt and Ally Ruggieri followed 21 seconds later. Kendall Skuse netted the next three straight for Buffalo State, the first on a free position, scoring at 15:42, 14:23 and 10:57. Jackie Dufresne made it 6-0 at 3:20 and the score was unchanged at the break.
 
Huntley got the Bears on the board 1:55 into the second half with an assist from junior midfielder Meaghan Paige (Carthage, N.Y./Carthage). Nina Schaefer her second and third goals at 14:44 and 13:16 for an 8-1 lead. Stark netted the Bears second marker at 11:32. After Christina Krowel notched the Bengals' ninth goal of the game, Potsdam answered with two straight. Huntley set up Perl at 8:25 and buried her second with 6:03 to play. With just two seconds left, Krowel closed the scoring at 10-4.
 
Bears junior goalie Katie Longamore (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) finished with 10 saves and Elyse Stark made nine for the Bengals.
 
Potsdam heads to SUNY Cortland on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. contest with the Red Dragons.
