OSWEGO, N.Y. – The No. 21 Oswego State baseball team fell in a pair of tight games to the No. 7/8 Cortland Red Dragons on Friday afternoon at the Laker Baseball Field. The visitors took the first game by an 8-6 score in 10 innings and the second, 1-0, in a seven-inning contest. Oswego falls to 21-11 (12-5) while Cortland improves to 30-8 (15-2).
Game 1
In a wild game, Oswego used two comebacks to send the game to extra innings, but ultimately fell, 8-6, in the ten-inning affair. Oswego was down 5-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh when freshman
Ryan Enos singled to get things started for the Lakers. Walks by second baseman
Brandon Nicholson and right fielder
Mike Dellicarri loaded the bases with one out. Senior
John Barnes cut the lead to three with a sacrifice fly and fellow senior
Eli Holton followed with a double to plate Nicholson and put runners at second and third.
Myles Kutscher delivered a game-tying single to make it a new game.
Cortland answered right back with a run in the top of the eighth and the game headed into the bottom of the ninth with Cortland up 6-5. With one out, Dellicarri notched his team-leading sixth homerun of the season to send the game to extras. Cortland tacked on a pair in the top of the tenth to conclude the scoring.
Kutscher was 4-for-5 in the game with three RBI and
Lukas Olsson was 3-for-5. Starting pitcher
Reston Pettit pitched six innings and allowed three earned runs in the no-decision for the Lakers.
Game 2
In the nightcap, senior
Robert Donnelly and Cortland's Mike Harrington locked up in a pitcher's duel. Neither pitcher allowed an earned run in the contest with Cortland scoring a lone unearned run in the top of the fifth inning on a pair of singles and a fielding error by the Lakers.
The key moment for the Lakers came in the bottom of the sixth when
Josh Hoagland singled to put some pressure on the Red Dragons.
Rocco Leone executed the sacrifice bunt to move Hoagland into scoring position. Walks by Nicholson and Enos loaded the bases for Dellicarri, who drove a ball to left field looking for the sacrifice fly. Cortland was able to bring the throw home in time to get Hoagland at the plate.
Holton put the tying run on second in the ninth with a two-out double, but a groundout ended the contest for the Lakers.
Donnelly (5-2) struck out four batters and scattered nine hits during his sixth complete game of the season in the hard-luck loss.
Oswego returns to their home field tomorrow at 12 p.m. for the final game in the three-set series against the Red Dragons.
