Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's soccer pushes past Potsdam 1-0

Roberto Ventura nets winner for Red Dragons

SUNY Oneonta freshman Roberto Ventura (Brentwood/Brentwood) scored his tenth goal of the season today to lift the men's soccer team to a 1-0 win at home versus Potsdam.  Ventura has now scored at least one goal in nine of the ten games he has played as a rookie.  Today, he notched his fifth game-winning goal helping the Red Dragons raise its overall record to 9-1-1 and 5-1 in the SUNYAC.

"Today's game was like yesterday in that we only played great in the second half," said Head Coach Iain Byrne.  "We did just enough to win the game."

Ventura's goal came in the 66th minute breaking the scoreless tie.  Ventura collected a through ball into the box from junior Carlos Martinez (Brentwood/Brentwood).  Once in possession, Ventura took one touch and rocketed a shot that went over the keepers outstretched hands before deflecting off the cross bar and into the goal.

After the goal, the Red Dragons secured control of the pace of the match.  Less than 30 seconds later, sophomore Jackson Leon (Albany/Albany) nearly made it 2-0 when he had a shot from deep inside the box.  He was denied on a one-handed save by Jakeb Mitchell and, on the rebound, freshman Jorge Hernandez (Brentwood/Brentwood) had a shot that was blocked.

Oneonta finished the match with a 19-7 shot advantage including 12-2 in the second half.

Nicholas Giordano (East Northport/Commack) handled the three shots that were on goal today to pick up his fifth shutout of the season.
