SUNY Oneonta freshman
Roberto Ventura (Brentwood/Brentwood) scored his tenth goal of the season today to lift the men's soccer team to a 1-0 win at home versus Potsdam. Ventura has now scored at least one goal in nine of the ten games he has played as a rookie. Today, he notched his fifth game-winning goal helping the Red Dragons raise its overall record to 9-1-1 and 5-1 in the SUNYAC.
Â
"Today's game was like yesterday in that we only played great in the second half," said Head Coach
Iain Byrne. "We did just enough to win the game."
Â
Ventura's goal came in the 66
th minute breaking the scoreless tie. Ventura collected a through ball into the box from junior
Carlos Martinez (Brentwood/Brentwood). Once in possession, Ventura took one touch and rocketed a shot that went over the keepers outstretched hands before deflecting off the cross bar and into the goal.
Â
After the goal, the Red Dragons secured control of the pace of the match. Less than 30 seconds later, sophomore
Jackson Leon (Albany/Albany) nearly made it 2-0 when he had a shot from deep inside the box. Â He was denied on a one-handed save by Jakeb Mitchell and, on the rebound, freshman
Jorge Hernandez (Brentwood/Brentwood) had a shot that was blocked.
Â
Oneonta finished the match with a 19-7 shot advantage including 12-2 in the second half.
Â
Nicholas Giordano (East Northport/Commack) handled the three shots that were on goal today to pick up his fifth shutout of the season.
