Red Dragons Blanked at #20 William Smith, 1-0

GENEVA, N.Y. – William Smith's Alexandra Frary scored early in the first half and the goal held up as the nationally 20th-ranked Herons defeated Cortland, 1-0, in non-conference field hockey action Wednesday night. The Red Dragons fell to 5-3 with the setback, while the Herons improved to 7-2.

For Cortland, junior goalie Kailynne Reinoehl (Lititz, PA/Warwick) registered eight saves. Goalie Emily King stopped eight shots for William Smith.

Frary tallied the game-winning goal just 1:52 into the contest when she scored on a rebound after Cortland senior back Meg Redmond (Accord/Rondout Valley) recorded a defensive save on a shot by Hannah Wood following a penalty corner. Redmond finished the game with two defensive saves.

The Red Dragons pressed for the tying goal in the later stages of the game, earning three straight penalty corners with just over 10 minutes remaining. King came up with a pair of saves to hold the lead, denying sophomore Hannah Burchell (Whitney Point) with 10:15 to play on the third corner and turning back a shot by senior Megan O'Brien (Carmel) with 7:43 to play.
