Brockport Finishes Invitational Unblemished

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport volleyball team cruised in the second day of the Golden Eagle Invitational as the bettered both SUNY Canton and Hiram College Saturday afternoon.
 
The Golden Eagles move to 24-8 on the 2017 season.
 
Game one vs SUNY Canton: W, 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-19)
 
Brockport started off hot earning the first three-points of set one. The Green and Gold extended their lead on a five-point run with points from Laiken Fox, Meaghan Mastro, and Jamie Schlesinger to take an 8-2 edge. The Golden Eagles added three more points to set the score at 12-5 on back-to-back kills from DeAnna Ortiz-Whittemore and one from Brianna Richardson. Both teams fought back and forth for the remainder of set one, but Brockport was able to hold onto the lead as the won by a final score of 25-18.
 
The Golden Eagles trailed in set two as the Kangaroos earned the first four points. Brockport answered as they recaptured the lead 7-5 on a four-point streak with kills from Mastro, Ortiz-Whittemore, and Richardson. Brockport struggled as SUNY Canton strung together multiple rallies to take a 14-11 advantage. The Green and Gold fought back late to take an 19-18 edge over the kangaroos. Brockport used that momentum on a four-point run to win set two with a pair of kills from Fox and an ace from Maddy Taylor.
 
The Golden Eagles offense came out strong in the third set taking a 5-2 lead over SUNY Canton. Brockport kept rolling as they extended their lead to 15-8, with a pair of aces from Mastro. The Green and Gold earned a four-point run late set with a pair of kills from Ortiz-Whittemore and one from Mastro. Brockport closed out the third set and the match on a pair of kills from Mastro and Cassie Birth, 25-19.
 
Ortiz-Whittemore led the offense for Brockport accounting for 11 kills, where Fox tallied 10. Noelle Poloncarz paced the offense dishing out 36 assists. Taylor led the defense as she racked up 14 kills, with Birth totaling 10.
 
Game two vs Hiram: W, 3-1 (25-22, 25-21, 22-25, 25)
 
Brockport jumped out to an early lead over the Terriers earning the first four points in set one. The Golden Eagles kept the offense going with another four-point run to take a 10-5 edge over Hiram.  The lead was extended to 19-14 as the offense kept rolling with a pair of kills from Richardson and one from Ortiz-Whittemore. Brockport held onto to the lead as they won set one by a score of 25-22.
 
The Golden Eagles started hot as they took an early lead in set two of 7-2. The Green and Gold pulled ahead 15-6 on a three-point run with all points coming from Richardson. Brockport found some struggle late in the game as the Terriers trimmed the lead to 22-19, but the Golden Eagles locked down and held onto the lead as they won set two 25-21.
Brockport fell behind early in set three and were not able to recover as Hiram won 25-22. The Golden Eagles came out with a vengeance in set four earning the first five points of the match. The Green and Gold strung together a four-point rally midway through the game to post a 16-10 advantage. Brockport finished the game strong on a four-point streak to give them a 24-16 edge with points from Kelly Waters and Schlesinger. The match was closed out on a kill from Waters as the Golden Eagles won by a final score of 25-17.
 
The Brockport offense was Led by fox who accounted for 20 kills on a .345 hitting percentage, where Ortiz-Whittemore added .415 hitting percentage. Poloncarz finished the game handing out 55 assists. Taylor finished the match with a game-high 28 digs, and Poloncarz recording 17.
 
Brockport will be back in action this Friday as they host the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) playoffs where they will face the winner of New Paltz vs Oneonta, with the game set to start at 7 p.m.
