Bats held in check against Oneonta

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Offense was in short supply Saturday in Fredonia softball's doubleheader loss Saturday to the Oneonta Red Dragons, 2-0 and

The Blue Devils (6-13-1 overall / 0-4 SUNYAC) were limited to two hits in the opener -- singles in the seventh inning by freshman Makenzie Keeler (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville DeWitt) and senior Katelyn Dennis (Webster, N.Y. / Webster Schroeder).

Keeler became the only Fredonia runner to reach third against winning pitcher Alyssa Bluethgen, who retired the first 15 batters in order and fanned the final two of the game to preserve her shutout. Sophomore right-hander Katie Yudin (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) was the losing pitcher, She held the Red Dragons scoreless until the fifth inning.

The Red Dragons (9-7 overall / 3-1 SUNYAC) led 1-0 after one inning and 3-0 after five before the Blue Devils scored their only runs of the doubleheader. Keeler had a double down the left-field line, her second hit of the game, and scored on a double to center by Dennis. After a single by junior Cassie Herman (Maybrook, N.Y./Valley Central), Yudin made it 3-2 with an RBI single off Oneonta starter Julia Calabro. The Blue Devils stranded the tying run at second and the go-ahead run at first.

Oneonta added two insurance runs in the last off the sixth off Lauren Collorone (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore), who came on in relief of Fredonia starter and losing pitcher Sam Seegar (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Starpoint). Bluethgen relieved Calabro and got the final three outs to earn a save to go along with her win in Game 1. Dana DelGenio had three hits, two RBI, and two runs scored while Selena Ruiz was 4 for 4 atop the Oneonta batting order.

The Blue Devils have a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday at Allegheny before traveling to Buffalo State for two SUNYAC games next Saturday.
