SUNYAC Baseball Championship recap day 1

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Day one of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Baseball Championship is over and three teams remain as they battle for the 2019 conference title. 

Game 1: Cortland vs. Oneonta

#4 Oneonta stunned #1 Cortland 3-2 in a great game to kick off the SUNYAC Baseball Championship weekend. Robert Ottaviano led Oneonta throwing a complete game giving up 6 hits and 2 runs with 5 strikeouts and 2 walks. Patrick McGee went 2-3 for Oneonta while Dominic LaMonica hit a solo homerun which proves to be the difference maker in game one.

Game 2: Oswego vs. Fredonia

#2 Oswego took down #3 Fredonia 5-2 in game two of the SUNYAC baseball playoffs. Fredonia went up 2-0 early in the game until Oswego tied it back up in the Bottom of the 5th on an RBI double from Lukas Olsson. The Lakers never looked back from there on out as they added one run in the 6th and two more in the 7th. Luke Kuczewski threw 8 innings giving up 5 runs with 5 walks and 3 strikeouts for the Blue Devils in a tough loss.      

Game 3: Cortland vs. Fredonia

Cortland and Fredonia had a pitching duel that took us to extra innings where the Red Dragons pulled one out on a walk off single by Steven Salisbury. Matt Valin threw 10 shutout innings only giving up 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out 17 batters to end Fredonia's season. Sam Cestra threw 9.2 innings giving up 11 hits and 5 walks with 5 strikeouts in another tough loss for the Blue Devils.  

On Sunday, May 5th Oswego and Oneonta will play at 10 a.m. to secure a spot in the championship game. After that Cortland will play the loser of the 10 a.m. game in another elimination game to play for the SUNYAC championship.
